Carsten Nicolai

Volume!, Roma

334m/s is a project in which sound and vision merge creating a sinestetic experience. The work, a real experiment, is a plexiglass double structure in which a flame gradually burns the gas inside the box. The flame burns with a velocity that is faster than the velocity of sound and each time it creates a new specific sound. Curated by Lorenzo Benedetti, Emanuela Nobile Mino.

Carsten Nicolai is one of the most important figures of the international artistic panorama. His work moves between contemporary art and electronic music and he always tries to make these two fields interact the one with the other. He realizes for Volume! a project named 334m/s in which sound and vision merge creating a sinestetic experience. The work, a real experiment, is a plexiglass double structure in which a flame gradually burns the gas inside the box. The flame burns with a velocity that is faster than the velocity of sound and each time it creates a new specific sound.

334m/s is a sort of prototype of a new instrument able to generate a sound springing out from the combustion high velocity. In his previous installations, Carsten Nicolai has already used elements like water, ice and smoke. These elements create dissolves, rarefied atmospheres, vanishing and temporary structures, and they allow the artist to create conditions always mirroring a sound situation. At Volume! the artist tries to stimulate the perception of the work through giving to sound and image the same intensity. In his work visual and sound perceptions merge thanks to his using of a minimalist grammar that contributes to encourage steady confrontation between the music and visual art.

He was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt in Germany in 1965. He works and lives between Berlin and Chemnitz.
In 1984 he works as a gardener. From 1985 to 1990 he studies Landscape Design in Dresda. In 1982 he is the co-founder of the Voxxx.Kultur und Kommunikationszentrum, a cultural centre of Chemnitz. In 1994 he founds the “Noton.archiv fuer ton und nichtton”, and in 1999 he creates the recording label raster-noton.de. Through his artistic and musical interventions he aims to create areas in which art and science can meet and confront each other. Nicolai took part to very important exhibitions including Documenta X and the 49 and the 50 Venice Biennial. He has made his one-man exhibitions in very important places, for example Anti Reflex in the Schirn Kunsthalle of Frankfurt or Syn Chron in the Nationalgalerie of Berlin. From many years on Nicolai, under the pseudonym of Alva Not, makes sound experiments in the field of electronic music. He has performed his concerts at museums and institutional spaces including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou of Paris, the Kunsthaus of Graz and the Tate Modern of London. Through the years Nicolai has cooperated with many artists among which Ryoji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, Thomas Knak e Ryuichi Sakamoto.
