Over 200 photographs by the big names of Italian photography such as Federico Patellani, Pietro Donzetti, Mario Giacomelli, Mario de Biasi and Franco Pinna have been brought together for the first time in the major international exhibition NeoRealismo.

The new photography in Italy 1932-1960. Italian neo-realism arose as a reaction to fascism, at first particularly in film, but after the Second World War it also developed into a movement in photography. It produced exquisite and often dramatic photographs with a lightly heroic gaze at the life of ordinary people, while also visualising the reality of a postwar Italy plagued by poverty. The exhibition reveals the interchanges between photography, film and literature, and is comprised to a large extent of vintage prints, plus film fragments, posters, magazines and books.

In Italy neo-realism developed primarily as a reaction to the photographic and cinematic styles of fascism, which were dominated by an aesthetic that was far removed from reality. 'Neo-realism' is known primarily as a movement in cinema, but after World War II it developed an important photographic counterpart with photographers such as Federico Patellani, Pietro Donzetti, Mario Giacomelli, Mario Biasi and Franco Pinna.

Their work – always in black and white – is characterised by a lightly heroic presentation of the common man or woman and everyday life, while also visualising the poverty that plagued Italy for many years in the postwar period. The use of the 'method' of neo-realism (film directors forinstance had common people 'play' themselves) led to heated debates about the boundaries between engagement and journalism, documentary and art – discussions that regularly recur in our day as well.

Never before has there been such an extensive exhibition on this influential 'movement' in photography. A large proportion of the 200 photographs exhibited (in most cases vintage prints) come from the Bertero collection, Milan. The show also includes film fragments, posters, magazines and books. The exhibition was assembled by Enrica Viganò and Giuseppe Pina, and produced by AdmirA, Milan.
