How can you have a great vantage point on the world while staying at home? By leaning out of the window. The exhibition keeps in mind this historically recurrent position of the artist, with examples such as Duchamp’s Etant donné... or Warhol’s Empire, and draws together works where the “home” works as a frame, which helps give structure to our viewpoints and subjectivity. By observing the world from the keyhole, one can escape the global control of a voyeuristic society and recreate a private space from which to have an impact on the public space.
The mere act of recording things - sometimes fortuitously, sometimes unconsciously - turns into a process of translation, writing, or post-production of reality that bring into play the conditions in which they perceive but also get involved in the world - emotionally, practically, and politically. The exhibition brings together artists from different generations and various horizons for a singular exchange of points of view. It reminds the viewer of his own situation, giving him/her a chance to see it as his/her own and take a step back. The visit focuses on various contradictions: between gazing and monitoring, compulsion and construction, physical and social space, vision and blindness, idleness and hallucination…
