comunicato stampa

"One of the great pleasures in looking at works of art in the traditions of assemblage and collage is the simultaneous awareness that one beholds both an accumulation of disparate parts whose identity as such remains clear, and a newly created whole, unified internally by some combination of grace and brute on the part of the artist. In bringing such characteristics into painting and film, Paul Morrison both smooths over and intensifies sleight-in-hand and slapped-together aspects of his craft. The consistent surface of the wall, picture plane, or screen in Morrison’s works combined with the black and white palette to which all of his imagery is subjected, unify his compositions in a manner that overrides yet preserves the stylistic disparity within the work. Meanwhile, the suggestion of overlapping forms and linear perspective approximates the spatial logic of landscape painting while conflating and conflicting it with the unwieldy space and renegade relational logic collage can afford."
Christopher Miles, essay in the catalogue accompanying Paul Morrison’s solo show at Las Vegas Art Museum, 2008

British artist Paul Morrison is known for black and white images composed collage-style, as a pastiche of discrete, highly stylized representational forms, each of which appear derived from disparate graphic genres. Drawing inspiration from sources that range from popular cartoons to botanical drawings to Renaissance woodcuts, Morrison creates his graphic assemblages by manipulating found images. Colour is digitally removed and detail stripped away until the final motif is a black outline or silhouette of its former state. Morrison’s unique compositions afford viewers the opportunity to consider the intrinsic cognitive properties of each of the various graphic styles and the ways in which pictorial space is created through juxtaposition.

For the solo show at Alison Jacques Gallery, Paul Morrison will show a 21 foot long site-specific wall painting entitled Raphe, a term used to describe the longitudinal ridges that represent the part of the plant stem that is fused to the seed. Botanical subject matter such as modified primroses, pine trees and other plants in the foreground contrast in style and scale with one another and with the moonlit architecture in the background which appears to be enlarged from an Old Master woodcut.

Facing the wall painting will be a new 10 foot high floor based aluminium and steel sculpture entitled Mericarp. In the second gallery space, Morrison will show a new series of silver leaf paintings on linen. In the first floor project room there will be a new LCD screen film based work of collaged animations.

Paul Morrison was born in 1966 in Liverpool and lives and works in Sheffield. Morrison graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1998 and has since developed an international reputation through major museum exhibitions and commissions. Recent solo museum exhibitions include Las Vegas Art Museum, Nevada (2008); Bloomberg Space, London (2007); The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii (2006). Past museum solo shows include IMMA, Dublin; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles and Magasin, Grenoble. Recent commissions include Rhode Island School of Art & Design Museum (2008); Towada Art Centre, Japan (2008); Western Bridge Foundation, Seattle (2006) and Bloomberg, commissioned by the Public Art Fund, New York (2005). A new catalogue with an essay by Christopher Miles for the current solo show at Las Vegas Art Museum is currently being published. A solo show of new work will also run concurrently at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Miami.
