American Academy, Roma

Davos Dilemma.

È designer e architetto,vive a Milano e a San Francisco.

Rob Pruitt è nato nel 1964 a Washington, D.C.
Vive e lavora a New York
Me: the Art of Rob Pruitt”.

La mostra è realizzata in collaborazione con: Galleria Roberto Giustini & Partners, Galleria Babuino Novecento, Roma; Gavin Brown’s enterprise, New York.

Johanna Grawunder, Rob Pruitt
Davos Dilemma

Curated by Marcello Smarrelli

The Director of the American Academy in Rome, Prof. Carmela Vircillo Franklin, has the pleasure of presenting an exhibition by Johanna Grawunder and Rob Pruitt entitled Davos Dilemma, curated by Marcello Smarrelli. The opening, in the gallery of the American Academy in Rome, will be on the 15th of April 2008 from 6 pm to 9 pm.

This exhibition derives from the suggestion of the curator that California designer Johanna Grawunder and New York artist Rob Pruitt produce a new usable object and invent the function or need that it will satisfy. Connected to a preceding series of shows conceived of by Marcello Smarrelli for the Roberto Giustini’s Gallery in Rome, this object would be invested with “special” status as a work of art or design, to be then introduced into a daily reality already saturated by signs.

If, in recent years, we have witnessed a proliferation of forms and objects whose origin can no longer be traced either to the original ideals of the Bauhaus and Modernism, or to those proposed critically in opposition, what response can be offered by self-aware creators who critique the conception and creation of new forms?

In the current social context in which new objects of desire are continually created – new idols, sacred images, sophisticated fetishes that respond to needs (true or false) which are always more difficult to identify and define - what does it mean to deal with the conception of an object?

This show poses the further question about the unending process of establishing boundaries between art, design and architecture It is above all the ideal place for a real dialogue between the works by artist Rob Pruitt and the objects of design created by Johanna Grawunder.

But what is the Davos Dilemma that the title of the show refers to? It has always been thought that for a constant growth of the global economy a stable situation was required. However, given what has emerged during the last international economical summit that was held in Davos, this does not seem to correspond to reality anymore. Wars, social conflicts, political instability on the contrary seem to stimulate the economy, create demand. The Guns-to-Caviar Index, an economical indicator that has been invented in the USA, has shown how in the last 17 years the sale of war planes (guns) has grown proportionally – inverting an historical tendency - to the sale of very expensive jets for tourism (caviar). In general terms what this means is that by raising the expenditure for weapons the sale of luxury items increases as well, transforming the threat of instability into an opportunity for global wealth.

The Davos Dilemma is above all a metaphor for the extreme differences, the deep contradictions that characterize the new global political and economic scenarios. The enacting of these contradictions becomes the meeting place between the irreverent and conceptually ironic art of Rob Pruitt and of the powerful mark generated by the objects designed by Johanna Grawunder.

The latter involves a new series of tables, lights, benches, cabinets and consoles produced in limited edition. Built with raw materials, durable and made to last, these objects - contradicting the rough aesthetic of matter – are highly crafted, impeccable. Very far from a culture of design that privileges the fast and cheap, they belong to that category of objects that we might define “luxury items”. Steel, aluminium, mirrors are used in sheets reduced to the minimum width, yet without losing resistance. One can therefore obtain unusual sizes, gigantic for furniture, with a low environmental impact.

Rob Pruitt presents a series of new sculptures that combine minimalism with domestic design and that are infused with autobiography and personal psychology. One sculpture—inspired by his grandfather’s chocolate chip cookie recipe and the narrative presentation of the Seder plate—seeks to challenge our collective beliefs in gender roles and what is passed down from grandfather to grandson. In another piece, the ashes of Pruitt’s recently deceased father are presented in a handmade urn of simple carpentry, as learned from his father, and decorated with the artist’s recognizable imagery. Charles Schultz, an artistic forefather, is memorialized with a “cartoon” sculpture of a tombstone. And finally, Pruitt contemplates his own demise and lifelong battle with depression with the piece “The Suicide Note.”

Johanna Grawunder was born in San Diego, California in 1961. She lives between Milan and San Francisco. Her work as architect and designer spans a broad range of projects and scales, from architecture to interiors, to limited edition furniture and lights for various galleries in Europe and the USA. She also collaborates on products with a few select companies including Flos, Boffi, B&B and Salviati.
Graduating in 1984 from California Politecnic State University in San Luis Obispo with a bachelor of Architecture degree, she completed her final year of studies in Florence and in 1985 moved to Milan.
She worked with Sottsass Associati from 1985 to 2001, becoming a partner (with Ettore Sottsass and others) in 1989. At the Sottsass studio she was involved primarily with Architecture and interiors, co-designing with Sottsass, many of the firm’s most prestigious projects. In 2001 she left Sottsass Associati and opened her own studio in San Francisco and Milan.

Rob Pruitt was born in Washington D.C. in 1964. He lives and works in New York. Looking towards pop culture is a constant in the work of Pruitt. He skyrocketed to fame in the late 80’s as half of the art team Pruitt-Early. Their celebrated bodies of work, “Artwork for Teenage Boys” and “Artwork for Teenage Girls”, took art about gender politics into a radical new pop arena. With "The Red Black Green Red White and Blue Project", shown at the Leo Castelli gallery in New York in 1992, they enquired into the contradictions of the Afro-American community. For this show Pruitt was accused of racism and disappeared from the art scene. In 1998, Pruitt exploded back onto the scene with “Cocaine Buffet”, “101 Art Ideas You Can Do Yourself” and his glitter paintings of Panda bears. In his first one-man show in Italy (in Rome, July 2004) Pruitt showed a series of paintings portraying New York heiress Paris Hilton. Done in enamels on Vinyl canvas, inspired by the vast photographic iconography of the heiress, they focused on the more ostentatious and extreme aspects of her behaviour. Amongst the various works done for galleries and museums, there is the minimalist fountain “Evian Waterfall”, done in 2000 for the steps in front of the P.S.1 museum in New York, that refers both to the classical monumentality as to the contemporary obsession with purity and health.
This year, Abrams Publishing will be releasing a comprehensive career monograph entitled “Pop Touched Me: the Art of Rob Pruitt”.
