Towada Art Center

Towada Art Center, Towada

The museum is a central institution of arts and provides versatile features including installation spaces for 22 artworks by domestic and foreign artists, gallery spaces for exhibitions or events, a cafe facing Kancho-gai Street, civic activity spaces where citizens can perform various art and culture activities, open-air event spaces, and so on. The building of this institution was designed by an architect, Ryue Nishizawa.

Arts Towada, which is promoted by Towada city, is "an project of urban improvement with art". It is focusing around "Kancho-gai Street" area, which is located in the middle of the city center, 1.1 kilometers long symbolic road of Towada city. By introducing art as a new element in the city center, this project is aiming to create new attractiveness of the town as well as places where people to enjoy and communicate each other.

For the five years from 2005 to 2009, this project is going to be prompted with the following three elements as its key; 1) Installing artworks by domestic and foreign artists; 2) Constructing Towada Art Center [tentative name] as a central institution of the project; 3) Managing art events in the town, e.g. art exhibitions.

Additionally, Towada Art Center [tentative name], which is a central institution for the project, is now being under construction aiming to open in the spring of 2008. After the completion of Towada Art Center building, Symble Artworks will be installed, and the open-air art and culture zone will be entirely completed in the spring of 2010.

Towada city has been developed as one of major areas in Aomori prefecture (North part of Japan) and is a quite young city opened-up about 150 years ago by water supply from Inaoi River. In Towada city, the streets are set out in a grid and therefore it is called gone of roots of modern city planning in Japan. Particularly, the largest street in the center of the city where a lot of governmental office buildings exist has been developed and maintained as a symbol street of the city. This street, Kancho-gai Street bears four rows of pine and Japanese cherry blossom trees and flowerbeds with various flowers blooming throughout the seasons and received several awards by its beauty. Kancho-gai Street has been one of great regional prides of Towada citizens.

With Arts Towada, various artworks will be installed in phases for five years around and in Towada Art Center [tentative name] as well as the spaces along Kancho-gai Street.

As the first step, artworks will be installed in Towada Art Center, which is going to be completed in 2008. Artists from all over the world will create new artworks considering relevance with Towada city and are going to be installed not only in the gallery rooms but also in the courtyard or on the building roof. At this place, you will come across with unique artworks that can be only found in Towada city.
