Christoph Buchel

Fridericianum, Kassel

Deutsche grammatik. The artist challenges the visitor with his indeed spectacular and very complex room installations - they are touching the senses, are tickling the nerves, provoke and even raise hidden phobia. They negate a contemplative absorbing of art. Much more the active integration of the visitor, his becoming part of the room construction is aimed at, and only by these means the works of Buchel achieve completion in the end.

Christoph Büchel challenges the visitor with his indeed spectacular and very complex room installations - they are touching the senses, are tickling the nerves, provoke and even raise hidden phobia. They negate a contemplative absorbing of art. Much more the active integration of the visitor, his becoming part of the room construction is aimed at, and only by these means the works of Christoph Büchel achieve completion in the end.

The space and the carefully chosen materials play an essential role in the concept of the artist. In former exhibitions Christoph Büchel led the visitors through narrowed pipe systems, had them climb up and down ladders, made them crawl through rough holes in the floor or at one point descend through a top-loading freezer to get to another room level. The visitor walked through halls full of civilisation junk, wound himself through mountains of abandoned computers and all kinds of other electric appliances, was confronted with a bombed overland bus and invaded cramped trailers or containers similar to emergency accommodation – always on the adventurous journey to discover human environments and social fate. Very soon it becomes clear, that the preferably used materials emanate from our everyday life. Embedded in a room installation they receive a new context but never lose their dazzling background as symbols of both the individual and the collective experience.

Also in the grand opening exhibition at Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Christoph Büchel will deal with the political and social coherence and will establish a close local reference. Under the work title Deutsche Grammatik which relates to the historical presence of the Brothers Grimm in Kassel, the central themes of the room installations in the exhibition will focus on German history and the societal structures of the country.

A matter of particular interest will be the interrelation between the thematically orientated room installations and the choice of materials out of our everyday life with the neo-classical museum-building of the Kunsthalle Fridericianum. And again Christoph Büchel is not only challenging the visitors from Kassel, but invites them to become part of his installations. To experience, to perceive and to feel the sensation of the designed rooms make Christoph Büchel’s artwork so special – and if it should be, also with neck and crop.
