Yvon Lambert, Paris, is pleased to announce PEDRO REYES: Caractères Mobiles, the artist’s first solo show in Paris. The exhibition will feature all new works that share modularity and interchangeability as a common feature. In each work the sculptures exist not only as artworks but as functional environments. It is through this duality that Reyes’ work addresses the interplay of social and physical space, making the invisible geometry of human relationships tangible. In a recent project, Palas por Pistolas, exhibited at Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, Reyes worked with the local authorities of Culiacán, Mexico in a campaign to collect 1527 weapons that, once destroyed, were melted and made into 1527 shovels intended to plant 1527 trees. This reforestation endeavor led the artist to consider a new approach to designing a library. The result was Reyes’ striking Biblioteca Crater, an interactive environment that functions as a flexible shelving system.

The exhibition will also feature a new capula (a penetrable vinyl sculpture inspired in mineral formations) that allows viewers to have literal access into the sculpture, which functions as a reading space. In addition to the Biblioteca Crater and the new capula, Reyes will present a group of affiches, posters made with a vintage woodblock press. These affliches are the result of a workshop initiated by the artist in Chalco, a suburb of Mexico City in conjunction with Worldfund, a non-profit organization working to “reduce poverty in Latin America through education.” In the workshop, high school students studied classic philosophical and literary texts and each selected an excerpt. They used the phrases and paragraphs to make the affiches and the process aims to become a fine art printing system that could eventually be an income source for the school.

Reyes’ work has been exhibited at institutions throughout the world, including the South London Gallery; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Aspen Art Museum, Colorado; the Reina Sofia, Madrid; Yvon Lambert Gallery, NewYork; the Jumex Collection, Mexico City; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; Kunstwerke, Berlin; Museo-estudio Luis Barragan, Mexico City; the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Witte de With, Rotterdam; the Seattle Art Museum, Washington; and the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA.
