Vera Lutter

Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to present recent photographs from the Venice series by the German artist Vera Lutter.

Working with one of the earliest photographic devices, the camera obscura, Lutter creates large-scale black and white images that document her fascination for architectural and industrial superstructures. In her recent body of work, Lutter focuses on the extraordinary architecture of Venice. By deliberately choosing to explore Venice during its seasonal tidal flood, the artist was able to capture mirage-like perspectives of the Italian city. Due to the rise and fall of the water during the exposure time, the Venetian architecture in Lutter’s impressive photographs seems to be lifted out of its own gravity, it appears to float, almost hovers above the dissolving ground.

Vera Lutter was born in 1960 and studied in Munich. She lives and works in New York. Her work has been exhibited in major exhibitions, including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas (2005); the Kunsthaus Graz, Austria (2004); the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2002); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2002); the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago (2002); the Kunsthalle Basel (2001) and at the Dia Art Foundation, New York (1999). This is Vera Lutter’s third exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler, since she started working with the gallery in 2002.

In the context of the exhibition Venice – From Canaletto and Tuner to Monet (28.9. - 25.1.2009) at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, Vera Lutter will present a selection of photographs from her Venice series in the lower-level exhibition space.
