comunicato stampa

The International Program of Moderna Museet is organizing a big event for contemporary Nordic Art in Asia during 2002 - 2003.
The exhibition is called 'Beyond Paradise, Nordic Artists Travel East' and will open at The National Art Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand on February 16th 2002.
It will then continue to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Preliminary plans also include Saigon, Vietnam and Shanghai, China during 2003.

When Moderna Museet's International Program took the initiative to organize an exhibition with contemporary Nordic art in this part of the world a wish for an 'Asian outlook' in the choice of artists and works of art, was expressed.
The choice fell on independent curator Apinan Poshyananda from Bangkok, who has shown interest for Nordic art for a long time and who has already organized a series of international exhibitions.
He was invited to visit Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland during early 2000. Hosts during this visit were DCA in Denmark, FRAME in Finland, NP:Art and Museet for Samtidskonst in Norway.
These institutions together with Svenska Institutet in Stockholm became co-partners with Moderna Museet in the project.

The artists participating in the project are as follows:

From Finland:
Jouko Lehtola
Eija-Liisa Ahtila
Salla Tykka;
Elina Brotherus
Esko Mannikko;
Heli Rekula
Helena Hietanen

From Sweden:
Henrik Hakansson
Peter Johansson
Annee Olofsson
Annika von Hausswolff
CM von Hausswolff
Maria Friberg
Magnus Wallin

From Norway:
Kjell Bjorgeengen
Torbjorn Rodland
Vibeke Tandberg
Mette Tronvoll
Iver Jaks
Per Maning

From Denmark:
Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset
Mads Gamdrup
Peter Land

From Iceland/Denmark:
Olafur Eliasson (only participating in the catalogue))

Some of the artists are showing site-specific works, Henrik Hakansson is one example. He spent two months in Thailand in order to investigate the living environment for the almost extinct thrush Guerney's Pitta in south Thailand, of which only twelve birds remain.
Other artists show existing works and the main focus of the exhibition is on video and photography.

Beyond Paradise aims to create a meeting point between two peripheral art movements that are now gaining more and more international recognition, contemporary Nordic art and its Asian equivalence.
Contemporary Nordic Art has been seen in many international contexts lately but a manifestation as extensive as this one has not yet been done in this part of the world.

The exhibition also includes a Nordic film and video program that has been put together by Henrik Orrje and Richard Julin, both curators at Filmform .

The program is called "Right About Now" and will tour around Asia together with the exhibition. Svenska Institutet will also put together a program with Swedish films that will be shown foremost in Bangkok.

The expectation with Beyond Paradise is to form new contacts and that the exhibition can be of inspiration and a source of knowledge about our time as it is in the Nordic part of the world.
How we live, how we feel and express ourselves through the art will be expressed in the exhibition.
This could lead to discoveries of similarities and differences that were not known before.

A catalogue is produced for the exhibition, designed by Martin Farran-Lee. It will have the form of a magazine and its main focus will be the artists own material and it will also contain two essays; one by Apinan Poshyananda and one by the Swedish art-critic and chief editor for NU: The Nordic Art Review, John Peter Nilsson. Henrik Orrje and Richard Julin have written a text dealing with the film and video program and the former director of Moderna Museet, David Elliott has written the preface. The catalogue will only be distributed in the places where the exhibition is being shown and will be free at the openings.
