comunicato stampa

ELO. INNER EXILE - OUTER LIMITS
Curated by Christian Mosar

The exhibition Elo (“now” in Luxembourg parlance) presents a snapshot of contem- porary production in Luxembourg. Organised by Mudam, it exhibits works mostly produced specially for the exhibition by artists brought together by the independent curator Christian Mosar. Underlining the fact that there is no specifically “Luxembourg art”, while showing works that involve different approaches and subjects, Elo aims to focus on the impor- tant development of visual arts in Luxembourg over the last decade. This evolution was aided both by the implementation of a dynamic cultural policy, that included the creation of new institutions dedicated to contemporary art, and by the growing number of artists residing in Luxembourg. New talents emerged during this decade and established artists reconsidered and updated their approach. The particular context of the Grand Duchy, with its limited territorial space and openness to the world, means that its art scene is viewed as a digest of singularities and plays of influences that enlivens today’s artistic field: between interior exile and external limits.

On the occasion of the exhibition Elo. Inner Exile - Outer Limits a catalogue is being published with texts by Christian Mosar, Josée Hansen, Lucien Kayser, Didier Damiani and Paul di Felice. Artists: Götz Arndt, Jean-Marie Biwer, Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, Simone Decker, Stina Fisch, Christian Frantzen, Tina Gillen, Tom Hermes, Paul Kirps, Yvan Klein, Filip Markiewicz, Isabelle Marmann, Bertrand Ney, Moritz Ney, Antoine Prum, Dany Prum, Roland Quetsch, Pasha Rafiy, Saskia Raux & Marc Scozzai, Danielle Scheuer, Eric Schockmel, Jean-Louis Schuller, The Plug, Jeanine Unsen, Roger Wagner, Trixi Weis, Vera Weisgerber, Wennig & Daubach

Ena Swansea
Curated by Marie-Claude Beaud

Mudam Luxembourg is pleased to present from 11 October 2008 to 2 February 2009 a solo exhibition by American artist Ena Swansea, focusing on 13 recent large-scale paintings. Ena Swansea’s New York paintings evoke a bleak image of the Big Apple. Her depictions of New York’s nocturnal club life, whose scenes and sexual identities she often portrays, are juxtaposed with more unusual perspectives of New York, such as that of parades taking place in the urban canyons of the metropolis, through which she allocates both childish and threatening traits to Manhattan’s megalomania.

Swansea’s highly elaborate and unique preparation of her canvases, characterised by a spe- cially developped graphite base on which the superimposed paint has only a minimal hold, bestows a rainy and mineral atmosphere upon her works, absorbing light or, depending on the angle, reflecting it with an icy brilliance. The forms shaped with large brush strokes take on a translucent character. Nevertheless, this smooth and metallic base layer represents more than just a simple optical effect: it gives Ena Swansea’s works an additional meta- phorical density.

Her choice of subjects, often derived from photos and snapshots, are reminiscent in their framing of certain paintings by Edgar Degas or Edouard Manet, whose critical views on the modern art movement of the late nineteenth century appear to echo the unerring and dis- tanced view that Ena Swansea harbours with regard to her contemporaries at the beginning of the new millennium. These aspects of Ena Swansea’s work are highlighted in the two extremely large-scale paint- ings around which the exhibition is centred. Kembra 2 is the portrait of Kembra Pfahler, who was an emblematic singer and performance artist of the underground culture of the 1990s, depicted while performing with her theatrical rock band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. In demands, Swansea illustrates more than just one of the parades occupying the streets of New York. Her melancholic view, seen through a window wet with rain, keeps observers in a state of tension between participation and distance.

John Lurie
Curated by Marie-Claude Beaud

Mudam Luxemburg is pleased to present a major exhibition by New York artist John Lurie, which will focus on approximately 80 recent works on paper, clay boards and canvases. John Lurie (Minnesota, 1952) first became known for his work as the leader of the musical group The Lounge Lizards and later for his acting, most notably the films Down By Law and Stranger Than Paradise. Lurie has also composed the music for over twenty films, receiving a Grammy nomination for Get Shorty. He directed and produced the television series Fishing with John, which in the US is perhaps his most significant work to date.

In 1999, Lurie created the fictional character Marvin Pontiac and recorded The Legendary Marvin Pontiac - Greatest Hits CD for his own label, Strange and Beautiful Music. It is said that Marvin would not record for a label unless its president came to his house and mowed the lawn. All of these endeavors have cemented Lurie’s legend as a cultural icon. Perhaps unsurprisingly, John Lurie has also been painting since the early 1970’s, something he has chosen to keep secret, not having his first show until 2004 at Anton Kern Gallery in New York. Stephan Aquin, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts remarked, “We thought we knew all we needed to know about 1980’s paintings, then John Lurie appears.”

What one first notices in Lurie’s work is the humor. His humor is annihilating. But it would be a mistake to think the humor was the most important element of these paintings. Like his music, the work has a broken, childlike quality that gives a glimpse into an atypical world, amidst rather incredible, unique and beautiful technique. As stated by poet and writer Glenn O’Brian, “like Thelonious Monk, Lurie knows how to exploit the seemingly wrong note, the wrong color. It is a private language of hieroglyphics reflecting his unique self-education. His paintings, while sometimes pointedly primitive, are beautifully crafted with a refined obstinacy.”

Fellow artist James Nares says “Lurie’s work does something that art seldom achieves, it makes you laugh (even if we’re not quite sure why). It’s funny. Though funny here is no joke. It’s a funny that skews the mind, leaving a sense of elevated perplexity in its wake. It’s baf- fling, rude, sweet and crude - but never nasty, mean-spirited or dumb. Rather, it is a honest irreverence.” In 2006 Lurie had a first solo museum exhibition at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York. In the same year he exhibited in the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2007 his work was shown in a solo exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. He also released a book of black and white drawings, Learn To Draw, published by Walther König, and most recently, A Fine Example of Art was released, a full color book of over 80 reproductions. The Museum of Modern Art in New York has acquired his work for their permanent collection.
Exhibition from October 11 to December 8, 2008

GO EAST I. MUDAM COLLECTION

With the support of KBL European Private Bankers, Mudam launched in 2007 the multian- nual programme Go East, aiming to put together a collection of works by artists originating from Eastern Europe. Without restricting itself to the “new” member states of the European Union, this project aims to cover a vast geographical area, stretching from the Baltic States to the Caucasus, from Russia to Central Asia. The current exhibition is an opportunity to provide an interim review of this ambitious programme and to present two works already acquired thanks to the fund: Dubbing (2001) by Roman Ondák and Lemniscate (2007) by Zilvinas Kempinas. Other works that the museum already acquired through this fund are the film Shadow for a while (2007) by the Romanian artist Mircea Cantor and a work from the Only after dark series realized in 2007 by the Bosnian artist Bojan ŠarČeviĆ. From now on these works belong to the Mudam Collection, which includes many other works by artists originating from Eastern Europe, such as Erik Boulatov, Nedko Solakov, or Marina AbramoviĆ. The exhibition is also linked to the Collector’s Corner programme, which highlights the manifold relationships Mudam fosters with private collectors, public institutions or fund- raisers from companies.

Exhibition from 11 October 2008 to 8 December 2008

NOUVELLES FORMES. Pierre Charpin à Sèvres

“Going for the essential, seeking the essence of forms, without implying a search for neutrality or, even less so, for banality. To be Sèvres! To design forms that are present, generous in their vol- umes, their proportions, their elegance, as well as discreet, without any excessive outlines, with very few details and a fluid volumetry that gives free rein to light.” Pierre Charpin

It was not until he had completed his studies at the Beaux-Arts that Pierre Charpin turned to design. Since working in Milan in 1993/94 in the workshop of George Sowden, founding mem- ber along with Ettore Sottsass of the Memphis group, he has returned to France where he has launched several research projects involving furniture, glass and ceramics. At the same time, he has worked for different design houses, such as Alessi, Venini, Montina and Post Design, while also teaching at the Reims College of Art and Design. Charpin’s creations are characterised by their formal sobriety and the harmony that they exude. His artistic approach, close to that of a sculptor, gives rise to objects imprinted with a high plasticity that suggest a more sensorial than structural approach. Beyond the apparent simplicity of the forms, the design of his works incor- porates playful, even humorous aspects.

The Manufacture nationale de Sèvres commissioned Pierre Charpin to enhance their collection of “forms”, a vast stock of mould forms that dates back to the middle of the 18th century and boasts an impressive number of pieces. This collection, which has not been released since the 1950s, is thus part of the tradition of the factory to gather a host of models that other artists can work from. This proved to be a delicate undertaking, which resulted in the Vase Charpin, available in four sizes and accompanied by the Coupe Charpin. Their silhouette, at first sight so simple and elementary, is that of a downward narrowing cylinder, the mouth of which is encircled by the fine border of a concave lid, leaving a smaller opening. From these “new forms”, Charpin has also created the Vase Ruban, available in a limited series and decorated with three different designs featuring ribbons with more or less sinuous contours.
