Katherine Bernhardt

Mark Ransom, London

Greeky. The exhibition consists of over 70 new paintings, including new work produced at her recent residency The Bikini Factory, Mykonos, Greece. The new portraits combine Bernhardt's wry commentary on popular culture with Greek mythological imagery; thus, Agyness Deyn becomes Hermes, the messenger and god of trickery.

comunicato stampa

RANSOM presents the first major UK exhibition of the New York artist Katherine Bernhardt, to coincide with the launch of the new 10,000 square foot gallery space. Katherine Bernhardt’s work has been described as “a fashion shoot orgy of legs, eyeliner, red lips, big hair and more legs”. Jerry Saltz, New York Magazine.

“Bernhardt’s portraits are of such tabloid mainstays such as Gisele Bundchen and Kanye West… she paints the icons as if they were disintegrating in a maelstrom of brushstrokes and drips of vivid colour.” The New Yorker.

Following her highly acclaimed solo shows in Paris and New York, Bernhard’s show “Greeky” consists of over 70 new paintings, including new work produced at her recent residency The Bikini Factory, Mykonos, Greece. The new 20 x 24 inch portraits combine Bernhardt’s wry commentary on popular culture with Greek mythological imagery; thus, Agyness Deyn becomes Hermes, the messenger and god of trickery.

The exhibition will be held at 107a Dove Walk (the mews off Pimlico Road, just round the corner from Sloane square and the newly opening Saatchi gallery). The large, high ceiling space (over 10,000 square feet), with 7 exhibition spaces will open for the exclusive Bernhardt Private View on the 16th October, at the start of Frieze Week. The space is a perfect showcase for Bernhardt’s larger canvases, which reach sizes of up to 8 x 4 feet. It is expected to host a program of 6 major exhibitions per annum, with scope for additional smaller exhibitions, events, and installations.

Katherine Bernhardt will be artist in residence at Ransom from October 1st and will be available for interviews in the UK from that date.
Katherine’s work can be viewed on the Saatchi website, amongst many others.
