KOSMOPOLIS 08, 4th International Literature Fest will take place at the CCCB from 22 to 26 October 2008. In accordance with the line marked out by its director Juan Insua, it will be devoted to the commitment of writers to new social, ecological and scientific causes, along with the changes taking place in journalism due to the impact of the new media. All this in a context in which the oral word, the written word and the electronic word interact in a single, exciting time and space: KOSMOPOLIS 08.

The themes providing the driving force of K08 are:

Writers for change explores the different ways in which authors take on new social and environmental causes, revisiting the old controversy between literature and commitment, and reviving the role of literature in these times of new, accelerated change.

Participants: Gao Xingjian, JM Coetzee (recorded interview), Tzvetan Todorov, Hari Kunzru, Dave Eggers, Donna Leon, Juan José López de Uralde, David Rieff, Russell Banks, Elias Khouri, Francesc Bellmunt, Narcís Comadira, Antònia Vicens and Simona Škrabec

Journalism xxi considers the crisis of corporate journalism and the changes taking place within the profession due to the impact of the new media, as well as the difficulties facing investigative journalism as we enter the new century.

Participants: Dan Gillmor, Francis Pisani, Robert Boynton and Amira Hass

Poetry Today. Modern Tradition and the Spoken Word. Poetry that follows the modern tradition is suffering not only from a crisis of readers, but also from a thematic and aesthetic crisis, and questions arise as to whether the form has become sterile and obsolete. Meanwhile, genres like hip hop, spoken word and sound poetry are revitalising oral poetry, introducing new forms of diction and powerful social content.

Participants: John Giorno, Pierre Joris, Lydia Lunch, Jorge Riechmann, Eduard Escoffet, Gonzalo Escarpa, Enric Casasses, Perejaume, Bartomeu Ferrando, Krzysztof Czyzewski and Chris Keulemans

Ballard Special. To complement the exhibition “Autopsy of the New Millennium”, devoted to J.G. Ballard, Kosmopolis 08 presents two sessions on the work of this British writer and his influence on the contemporary cultural imaginary.

Participants: Paco Porrúa, Marcial Souto, Marta Peirano, Toby Litt, Bruce Sterling and V. Vale

Literature and Hypermedia II explores the dilemmas of interactivity, presenting new tools for poetic creation and analysing the myths and realities of Webs 2.0 and 3.0 in collective creation, with specific workshops and sessions devoted to each theme.

Participants: Robert Coover and Bruce Sterling

Comics, Literature and Music takes an unprejudiced new look at the so-called Ninth Art. This fresh approach revolves around three activities: a lecture, a workshop and an unusual “animated concert” at which leading authors draw their cartoons to the accompaniment of live music.

Participants: Max, Sonia Pulido, Calpurnio, Neosol and Edmond Baudoin

Oral Literature explores new urban forms of oral literature such as hip hop, spoken word and poetry slam competitions. Besides performances by well-known poets and slammers, there will be a workshop on narrative and dramatic techniques with a member of the Nuyorican Poets Café team, and a round table on the future of slam poetry.

Participants: Nuyorican Poets Café Team, John Giorno, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson (videoconference)

Homage to Agustí Bartra. In this edition of Kosmopolis, and on the occasion of the centenary of Agustí Bartra’s birth, a homage to this author will be celebrated with several activities which will tackle Bartra’s figure and his influence on both sides of the Atlantic.

Participants: Roger Bartra, José María Espinasa, Jordi Julià, Lluís Calvo and Sam Abrams

Kosmopolis. International Literature Fest is a biennial literary event, born within the new century and held at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona.

It is a feast-laboratory where Literature is the focus of attention. Five days to celebrate a universalistic discourse, a feast to emancipate readers, to stimulate the canon’s mutation, to shake genres, to sail in languages and to revise myths, traditions and identities.

In a context where the oral word, the printed word and the electronic word reflect the tremors of a globalized world, a prospect of mutating genres, formats and storage systems is emerging. Kosmopolis condenses and amplifies this process, placing literature at the centre of the scene and interacting with the arts and sciences.

Kosmopolis is a date with art and freedom inspired in an old consciousness: we are citizens of the cosmos, citizens of the universe.
