Two Hundred Years of Scottish Painting

Scottish painting is vibrant, exploding with colour. It reflects the clarity of the northern light and the intensity of the landscape.

Panter & Hall specialise in Scottish art at their London based gallery and are bringing work by established and contemporary Scottish painters to a whole new generation of English collectors.

'Since the art market's 'discovery' of the Colourists in the early 1980s, dealers have looked north of the border to satisfy the burgeoning public taste for light and colour that Scottish art has come to represent' says Matthew Hall. 'We find that the tradition of powerful colour and good draughtsmanship is still very much alive in the current crop of young Scottish talent, and despite the threat of worldwide recession, the demand for their work amongst a London market starved of good painting remains very strong. Despite the current financial insecurities in the city the Scottish Art Market has proved as resilient as ever, with prices for good quality works by established painters consistently making record prices in the auction rooms. The affordability of contemporary Scottish painting remains a great draw to young collectors and corporate buyers alike.'

Tiffany Panter and Matthew Hall's regular visits to the Edinburgh and Glasgow WASP (Arts Council) studios have unearthed a rich vein of excellent new work, never before shown outside Scotland. Now they regularly exhibit emerging Scottish talent in an annual programme of group and solo exhibitions.

Panter & Hall's Scottish Show will include work from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including established names such as Patrick Nasmyth, DY Cameron, George Houston and Anne Redpath, as well as the contemporary painters Sandy McIntosh, Simon Laurie and Chris Bushe who have all been launched by the gallery over the past year and a half and are building a significant following.

Background on Panter & Hall
Tiffany Panter began her career at Christie's New York, whilst Matthew Hall worked for major Cotswolds dealer John Noott before working together for several years at a leading West End art gallery. After a combined seventeen years of experience in the art market, Panter & Hall decided the time had come to open their own gallery capitalising on their combined knowledge and mutual enjoyment of the business. The Gallery is situated in a narrow Mayfair town house in historic Shepherd Market. This delightful Georgian house arranged over four floors creates an intimate, domestic atmosphere, that complements the work on show. Their philosophy is a return to old fashioned art dealing, with its emphasis on personal client service and an academic respect for good painting.
