The group exhibition Experimenta Folklore concerns the phenomenon folklore as a musical element within contemporary art production. The project aims to relate, in a humorous manner, an understanding of tradition and modernity through the particular installations and performances of various artists; incorporating self-built instruments and costumes. Some of the projects in the exhibition will be questioning the importance that traditional customs, rhymes, rites and harmonies have in our present. In addition, 10 Reasons to be a Member: Judith Raum shows documentary material revealing the structure and central topics of recent projects realized by "Contemporary Arts Library".

Experimenta FOLKLORE
curated by Tobi Maier

The group exhibition "Experimenta FOLKLORE" concerns the phenomenon of folklore as a musical element within contemporary art production. The title of the project refers to the "Experimenta" series that was founded in Frankfurt in the 1970s and conceived as an international, experimental and boundary transcending theatre festival. It is considered to have been an important influence on the experimental music scene of that time.

Folklore can have both a mythical element as well as still contain the capacity to grapple with the worldly traditions of everyday life and the significance that advanced technology has in a post-modern world. The project aims to relate, in a humorous manner, an understanding of tradition and modernity through the particular installations and performances of various artists (- groups); incorporating self-built instruments and costumes.

Some of the artists' projects that have been introduced in the exhibition will be questioning the importance that traditional customs, rhymes, rites and harmonies have in our present. Further, the technical achievements that form part of the research of sound sources is not placed in the foreground, instead it is the investigation of musical anthologies and new forms of staging pop-cultural events, traditions, styles and myths.

"Experimenta FOLKLORE" presents works of Olaf Breuning, Sung Hyung Cho, Factotum, Jeremy Deller & Alan Kane, Uroš Djurić, Michael Dreher, Lilian Franck, Andy Holden, Honey-Suckle Company & Konrad Sprenger, Dani Jakob, juneau/projects/, Johanna Kandl/H. & J. #18 Judith Raum: Contemporary Arts Library
Services Pristina-Berlin

With her presentation of "Contemporary Arts Library Services Pristina – Berlin" in the 10 Reasons to be a Member- space at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Judith Raum shows documentary material revealing the structure and central topics of recent projects realized by "Contemporary Arts Library". Initiated in 2005 "Contemporary Arts Library" is a book collection of international contemporary art and theory in Pristina (Kosovo), consisting today of an inventory of 10,000 books, magazines and films that provide urgently required resources. Judith Raum has extended this facility since 2006, concentrating on establishing networks in (South-) Eastern Europe and on collecting publications from the region. In cooperation with invited artists the library has since developed into an open structure for participatory projects and presentations in and beyond Kosovo.

Accompanying her presentation, Judith Raum has invited international guests lectures that are involved in the project: Sezgin Boynik (Pristina), Céline Condorelli (London), Elke Marhöfer (Berlin) and Kerstin Meyer (Frankfurt).

The presentation takes place as part of the Königinnenwege IV series, which is organized by maecenia foundation. It is shown in cooperation with the foundation.
