Motti has developed his artistic approach through infiltrating and modifying existing situations. Often synonymous with public disturbance, his actions appear to be the grain of sand likely to derail any system, as ruthlessly efficient as they may be: whenever he contacts press agencies to claim responsibility for the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, organises his own funeral, or takes the place of the Indonesian delegate in a UN meeting on Human Rights.
The Centre d'art contemporain de la Ferme du Buisson is delighted
to welcome Gianni Motti for a dual project organised in
partnership with the centre d'art la Synagogue de Delme. Gianni
Motti is an innovating and resolutely unique artist, who in the
space of 20 years has stamped his mark on the international art
scene with his own brand of artistic activism. Always true to his
motto, to "be in the wrong place at the right time", he is there
on every front, but more often than not outside of the world of
art. A true genius in terms of owning and twisting everyday or
topical events, he has developed his artistic approach through
infiltrating and modifying existing situations. Often synonymous
with public disturbance, his actions appear to be the grain of
sand likely to derail any system, as ruthlessly efficient as they
may be: whenever he contacts press agencies to claim
responsibility for the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle,
organises his own funeral, takes the place of the Indonesian
delegate in a UN meeting on Human Rights, or suggests to the
Cuban government to throw the United States out of Guantanamo Bay
to turn it into a cultural events centre, this artist uses his
inalienable freedom to oppose any form of supremacy.
Today, Gianni Motti shows his work in Noisiel, an iconic venue
for the development of a certain "ideal capitalism". La Ferme du
Buisson used to be the farm used for the nearby Menier chocolate
factories, and it clearly still represents the industrial and
utopic legacy of the 19th century and epitomises an era when
capitalism was not just an economic model but a full-blown
ideology. In this particular context and in this time of economic
crisis, the artist has designed a new project which will once
again truly test our value systems.
