Source Material

Tent, Rotterdam

On display the work by eight artists who use their interest in collection and archiving in order to reconsider the meaning of history, identity and time. In the current era access to source material has become virtually unlimited and the Internet functions as the archive of all archives. How can that immense amount of information be tamed? The artists on show use an unorthodox method of classification, in which the longing for order and clear arrangement can be converted into a desire to understand the world.

With Cor Dera, Reineke Otten, Özlem Altin, Marjolijn Dijkman, Kim Bouvy, Sjoerd Westbroek, Radboud Mens and Jeroen van Broekhuizen.

From 14 May to 28 June, TENT. presents the exhibition Source Material; with work by eight artists who use their interest in collection and archiving in order to reconsider the meaning of history, identity and time. In the current era access to source material has become virtually unlimited and the Internet functions as the archive of all archives. How can that immense amount of information be tamed? The artists in Source Material use an unorthodox method of classification, in which the longing for order and clear arrangement can be converted into a desire to understand the world.

Cor Dera wishes to influence our perception of nature in a critical manner. He collects and arranges photos of animals and plants from books, magazines, guidebooks or stock bureaus and makes photos himself. In 42 World Skin Color Maps designer Reineke Otten visualizes the skin colours of the world population with cheerful dots. The work of Özlem Altin contains a subtle and poetic commentary on our current visual culture. Altin often uses images from magazines, books and other found photographic material as a basis for her installations, which generates unusual and personal connections. Since 2005, Marjolijn Dijkman has been working on her Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (World Theatre), a growing collection of photos that she arranges in ‘Categories’. She makes the photos on walks, during residencies or while travelling without seeking structure. In TENT. she presents, among other things, a series in a projection lasting seven hours. Kim Bouvy’s photography and texts focus primarily on the contemporary Condition Urbaine, as she calls it. For Phantom City she uses sources including archive photos, newspaper clippings, promotional material, picture postcards and her own architectural photos of Rotterdam. From this material she constructs an installation in which a fictional story is told in words and images about a city that nobody knows, but that everybody believes they recognize. In 2008, Sjoerd Westbroek decided to copy 148 existing German drawings from the 18th and 19th century from a catalogue in order to force himself into a different method of working. In his new installation A new Method he displays projection equipment and a collection of copied images of various mathematical figures. Sound artist Radboud Mens is opening up his extensive LP archive to the public for the first time and presents a Noise Jukebox in TENT. with which the records can be played. Every day for the past ten years, Jeroen van Broekhuizen has made a photograph of what was showing on television. In his living room, an analogue camera is set up in front of his television. A large number of photos in chronological order cover his living room wall, while others are stored in folders. The photos provide a fairly accurate image of television history.
