As part of Contact 2002, Fresh Air is mounting ON Trespassing, a site-specific, photo-based exhibition in a downtown Toronto laneway. Fresh Air is an all-woman artist collective, established in 2001, whose mandate is international collaboration and site-specific work. The core members are Janet Bellotto (Toronto/Montreal), Isabelle Hayeur (Montreal), and Lisa Klapstock (Toronto). With each project, Fresh Air expands temporarily to include Canadian and international female artists. For ON Trespassing, the group has invited 2 European artists, Blanca Casas Brullet (France) and Martell Linsdell (UK), who will be in Toronto for the exhibition.

ON Trespassing will take place in a continuous row of 16 identical garages, located in a narrow laneway in a Toronto residential neighbourhood. Each of 5 artists will 'occupy' one garage, transforming it temporarily through the installation of artwork. The work will take a variety of photographic forms, from projection to video. With this exhibition Fresh Air is interested in provoking a new, fresh experience of both the banal, everyday urban environment, and of the viewing of art. By circumventing some of the barriers to art-viewing - like the traditional art gallery - Fresh Air hopes to engage a wider audience, and to make the experience of art a more active, immediate and integrated one.

Opening reception: Tuesday, April 30 from 5 to 8 PM.
