Yona Friedman and Jean-Baptiste Decavele. Etc.

Centre international d'art et du paysage, Ile de Vassiviere

Resulting from the collaboration of Yona Friedman and Jean-Baptiste Decavele, photographer and videographer, this project realizes the transposition of an imaginary geography (from a Northern Island) on Vassiviere island. Visitors are invited to discover the mapping imaginary of Balkis island, punctuated by monumental works, outside and inside of the Art center, models, photographs or moving images. During the whole summer, the Cafe de l'ile, entirely refitted by Michelangelo Pistoletto, is opened with a completely artistic production, but while remaining a place where one comes to taste products of the plate of Millevaches.

Yona Friedman and Jean-Baptiste Decavele. Etc.
Balkis Island
curator Chiara Parisi

Resulting from the collaboration of Yona Friedman, a great theorist of architecture and Jean-Baptiste Decavèle, photographer and videographer, this original project realizes the transposition of an imaginary geography (from a Northern Island) on Vassiviere island. Visitors are invited to discover the mapping imaginary of Balkis island, punctuated by monumental works, outside and inside of the Art center, models, photographs or moving images.

The exhibition presents a world made of "achievable utopias" founding of the thought of the architect, and his whole iconography consisting of a personal bestiary of unicorns symbols expressing ideals of life. Images of Jean-Baptiste Decavèle are a part of the structures or drawings by Yona Friedman, designed since the beginning of their collaboration to create a common specific. Balkis Island is the accomplishment of a common structure that cannot be perceived in advance but that visitors will discover when they arrive in Vassivière and become inhabitants of this place.

The exhibition Etc Balkis island is organized thanks to the partnership of Naturalia beauté bio and Pro Natura.
The Eiffel Unicorn is a public order of the Ministry of Culture and Communication – National centre of the visual arts (CNAP).

Philippe Terrier-Hermann
Through the reconstitution of stereotyped aesthetics, Philippe Terrier-Hermann confronts us systematically to our ambiguity regarding the archetypes of power, beauty, success and perfection. His photos, though very polite, contain a passive subversion, that can reveal itself very explosive because demonstrating our most buried schizophrenias.

Events:

Projection of the Philippe Terrier-Hermann’s film at the Cinema Jean Gabin
Linked to his conference presented at Art Centre, Philippe Terrier-Hermann presents, with the partnership of the Cinema Jean Gabin in Eymoutiers, his last film entitled La Dérive.
At the time of a ballade in the kayak on an affluent of the Seine, two young people of good family left to the countryside to revise their right thus make the meeting of two other men: quite real figures of beings which seem without fasteners. They hold of the appearance and concern that they produce comes owing to the fact that they are absolutely there and at the same time elsewhere. Constituting a true revelation with the direction where their words and their acts must be interpreted, they propose to the two young men as the possible mirror where to write what constitutes them.

Sunday 5 july at 9 pm at the Cinema Jean Gabin in Eymoutiers

Victor Man, Attebasile
A book designed by the artist accompanies the exhibition Attebasile, co-edited by Ciap and Ikon Gallery.
Victor Man’s skill consists in creating, from an atmosphere that allows for questioning by means of different modalities, the sentiment of sacrality that can be produced thanks to the use of light and stage direction. By associating notions of desire and fragmentation – geographical and ideological – the artist creates new narrations where human sensuality is evoked with all the idyllic and infernal scenarios that go with it. Divorced from its context and emptied of its primary substance, each work is reformulated with a new vocabulary to create what the artist describes as “a terrain of turbulence where truth becomes a question of signs.”

Victor Man, Attebasile, artist book, 96 pages, co-edition Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière/Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 2009 20 euros
