Two exhibitions

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead

Fiona Crisp presents a solo exhibition of large-scale photographic works, produced over the last six years. The images in question range from Early Christian Catacombs and a Second World War underground hospital in Guernsey, to the nearby lead mining museum at Killope, County Durham. All of these locations were chosen by the artist primarily for the sense of physical power that they evoke but also for the fact that they are all now tourist sites where complex relationships between heritage, leisure and history are brought into question. Seripop, are two artists Yannick Desranleau and Chloe Lum who live in Montreal, Canada who are driven by a DIY underground music scene creating posters and artwork for their own band AIDS Wolf and other musicians, concerned with experimenting with surrealist and psychedelic imagery.

Fiona Crisp - Subterrenia

BALTIC presents a solo exhibition of large-scale photographic works by Fiona Crisp, curated from four distinct series of images, produced over the last six years.

Fiona Crisp is known for making largescale photographic installations that explore the relationship between photography and architectural space.
In this new body of works, it is the journey from phenomenological experience to photographic representation that is being explored. Here, indicators of time, climate or identifiable location are all suspended, leaving instead a sense of intense interiority. Crisp lives and works in Northumberland and is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Northumbria University.
Her work is represented by Matt's Gallery, London.

Subterrenia has been supported by Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall and funded by Arts Council England, South West. The exhibition tour commences at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead and then travels to Impressions Gallery, Bradford Nov/Dec 09 and concluding at Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall Feb/March 2010.

A new monograph, Hyper Passive, has been published by Matt's Gallery to coincide with the exhibition and surveys Crisp's work from the last ten years. This fully illustrated publication includes an essay by Professor Christopher Townsend and an interview with Alessandro Vincentelli, Acting Head of Programme at BALTIC and is available from BALTIC Shop priced at £12.99.
