The exhibition PRECARIOUS FORM will confront challenging positions of artists, featuring a formal tendency towards the fragmentary and contingent. The Twenty first century seems to reflect the extreme fragility and rupture of life in a fractured, fast-changing, uncertain and nervous time. It is about a world in pieces and a parallel impulse in art making. Todays most innovative, essential sculptures are testing the limits. One of its strongest characteristics is the inherent ability to camouflage itself from any formal hierarchy.

Signifiers of pop culture are embedded in larger minimalist forms, teasing out relationships between aesthetics and mediums that are seemingly at odds with one another. The awkward but poignant combination of disparate artistic ideologies is further expressed in the tension between the details that incorporate mass-produced objects or materials and the often lumpy treatment of the sculptural surface by the artists. Even if the objects are big there remains neither enough time nor distance to perpetuate monuments. It is a profoundly modest, radically anti-heroic art, that can take on parodistic, sometimes carnivalesque overtones. A sculpture of fragments, a precarious, trembling form.

The history of assemblage does present a useful backdrop for the re-emergence of assembled forms in contemporary sculpture, primarily because contemporary sculpture has adopted the method of juxtaposition of forms, rather than a compositional blending of them, even if they loock minimalistic and construktivistic.
