Three exhibitions

S.M.A.K. - Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent

Michel Francois for the past 25 years he has been developing an artistic concept in the form of a 'rhizome'. His installations are assemblages of elements from diverse technical and conceptual layers of meaning. 'Mallarme', Het Boek' is a presentation of Klaus Scherubel's many-layered and increasingly comprehensive research into Stephane Mallarme's utopian wish in the 19th century. The exhibition includes publications, photos writing, video and wall painting. Coming People presents a selection of works of upcoming young artists who will graduate in 2009 at the Ghent Institutes.

Michel François
Curated by Philippe Van Cauteren & Guillaume Désanges

The exhibition in the S.M.A.K. originates in an ambitious plan of Michel François (° 1956 Sint-Truiden, BE), along the lines of his project “Faux Jumeaux” (“False Twins”), shown at S.M.A.K. between 18.10.2008 and 03.01.2010.

For the past 25 years he has been developing an artistic concept in the form of a ‘rhizome’. His installations are assemblages of elements from diverse technical and conceptual layers of meaning. These assembled works were presented in various exhibitions such as the Biennale of Sao Paulo in 1994, the Documenta in 1992 or in the Centre Georges Pompidou in 2002. He shows photographic work as well as videos and sculptural work, relating all this to heterogeneous material.

The exhibition can be looked upon as a complex of scenes that is being brought up to date and renewed. On the occasion of this exhibition with a retro-and pro-spective character, a catalogue will be compiled.

The exposition of Michel François will be shown in IAC - l'Institut d'art contemporain at Villeurbanne from the 12th of March untill the 9th of May 2010.

Klaus Scherübel
Mallarmé, Het Boek

"Mallarmé, Het Boek" is a presentation of Klaus Scherübel’s many-layered and increasingly comprehensive research into Stéphane Mallarmé’s utopian wish in the 19th century. The exhibition, which includes publications, photos writing, video and wall painting is the result of intensive research and an artistic quest for this nonexistent literary work. Indeed, for more than 30 years the French poet cherished the ambition to realise “Le Livre”.

He saw "Le Livre" as a cosmic architecture with texts: an extremely flexible structure comprising no less than every existing relationship between everything that exists. He planned to print precisely 480,000 copies of the realisation of this great body of work; unfortunately this never materialised and it remained a unique concept. Now, so many years later, Klaus Scherubel crawls into the skin of the publisher and promoter of Mallarmé’s invisible and almost forgotten masterpiece. He also couples a symposium to it – within this project.
