Stephen Ellis
May 23 June 22, 2002

Von Lintel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Stephen Ellis.

These intimately-scaled paintings demonstrate the qualities of visual syncopation and contemplativeness familiar from Ellis's previous work. Using a palette that ranges from aggressive to elegiac, Ellis brings together elements from sources as diverse as Eadweard Muybridge's photographs and the religious paintings of medieval Tibet.

In an essay accompanying Jump, an upcoming group show of contemporary abstract paintings, Ross Neher evaluated the artist's work in these terms:

Stephen Ellis's unerring painterly skills enable him to marry rigorous classical structure with suave process, the synthesis of which yields some of the most significant abstract painting made today.

Stephen Ellis has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. In recent years his work has been included in "New Abstractions", curated by the Reina Sophia in Madrid; "Abstraction/Abstractions" at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint Etienne; "After the Fall: Aspects of Abstract Painting Since the 1970s" at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, New York; "Vertical Painting" at P.S. 1; and "Grays" at Paula Cooper Gallery. Ellis is represented in numerous public and private collections internationally.

_____________

Gaston Bertin
May 23 June 22, 2002

Von Lintel Gallery introduces the photographs of Gason Bertin in an exhibition that marks the artist's first solo show in the United States.

Bertin's richly saturated c-prints extend the photographic tradition of experimentation with abstract forms. Influenced by graphic and industrial design, Bertin photographs his own paper constructions in extreme soft focus. The highly imaginative results demonstrate a profound understanding of light, color and form.

In the picture: 'Image of Nothing'Color "C" Print 40" x 60"

Gaston Bertin studied photography, industrial design and landscape architecture in the United States and Europe. He lives and works in Barcelona, New York and France.
