Diverse venues. Projects by a French artist Eric Maillet, an Artists Group Kosuge JCT, a German Artists Nina Fisher.
A French artist: Eric Maillet is specially coming to Japan for making the
video project relating the FIFA World Cup. During the duration of semi-final
and final games in the following week, Maillet takes videos in Tokyo,
Yokohama and Saitama to collect the relating images of World Cup in the
towns. He works in the Square in every morning to edit the videos, and to
renew the internet pages on the project website:
http://synesthesie.com/cav/geomab . The up-dated works are shown in each day
for a week in the Corridor (beside Portside Gallery) to see from the inside
and outside window of Yokohama Creation Square Bldg. Audience can meet the
artist to discuss his project in every morning from 11am-2pm at the Square.
Although these video works are using the related images of the FIFA World
Cup, he considers exploring the social context rather than he accords to
praise for the major sports event in the world. He intends to point out the
different aspects how the event is affected by the attitudes of people or
atmosphere of public places concerning this entertainment.
Especially, he intends to investigate advertising and promotion materials in
the World Cup. On this project, he marks on the concerned areas in the
images to be digital processed as "video mosaic" which is usually using to
avoid the recognition of anonymous faces. This digital process is made to
strengthen the visual effects, and also to develop aesthetics issues on his
work. The artist intends to concern censorship within consumerism and
capitalism in which commercialized items are occupied all over.
In the meantime, he attempts to develop the idea of "home-studio" in which
he creates the digital works in the tentative studio located at the same
place of the exhibition. The process of production is completely managed by
the artist : shooting by a handy video camera, editing on a laptop computer,
operating digital effects for the mosaics, encoding and burning of DVD,
projecting the works after the completion. The full process of the work is
visible and open to the public. Audiences have easy access to meet the
artists while his is working. This work is initiated and presented in the
public surrounding like the street, the corridor of building and the
internet; it goes to give spectators in all possible ways.
