68 is an even number, with full curves and full sound. Cabala associates it with conflict, lotto forecast with just a kind of soup. The year 68 of the twentieth century is a real divide. One of the few remembered without effort and probably the very only one to have earned a promotion to the rank of capitalized noun, a privilege usually reserved to centuries or at least to decades. Nineteen Sixty-eight starts in May, a May like this one, and in a few months it kicks up a row that would radically change the life of every man and woman of that generation and the following, along with the whole course of history.
Also for those who in 1968 were too young to take part in the change, and also for those like us who weren’t even in their fathers’ intentions yet, this is and remains a magic number, a powerful symbol, a well of fascinating stories written with huge and unfortunately obsolete words. The climax of a process destined—after such an investment of personal, cultural, and political energies—to an inexorable decline, it still drags behind it a strong nostalgic trail.
In confirmation of this persistence, think of the thousands tributes paid to it in this fortieth anniversary. Among them is ours, by images only. Because the power given to imagination by the struggles of that year, yielded extraordinary results in the visual culture and art: the match between Minimalism and Pop Art, the fervent passion of Tropicalism, the Arte Povera movement, the experiments of Body and Land Art, the Conceptual researches and the psychedelic drifts. Improved with age and still able to be astonishing, they are all present in this issue of May 2008. Dejavus are guaranteed, as is also the rekindling of old flames.
So here you have a string of some most representative and beautiful works created during that year, collected with the aim of catching the Zeitgeist and drawing a picture (a blurred and partial one, of course) of the art scene and atmosphere at that time. In this tricky yet exciting selection process, we have been helped by some of our most reliable contributors. You only need to turn the page over, and to plunge into the
past. After all, it is a damn great past! Long live 1968!
