An exhibition of works by Mexican-American artist Agustin Castillo and Elana Kundell who are both strongly influenced by a world of different cultures. While Castillo blends Mexican traditions in subject, color and material into his abstract art, Kundell is influenced by the impressions of her long stay in Morocco last year, drawing her into a new found palette of bright, sunny tones. Join us for an artist reception with a special concert with the entrancing live music that has influenced Elana Kundell’s artwork in the exhibition, featuring Moroccan Sufi rhythms on 12-string guitar by MoMo Loudiyi and members of the World/Moroccan/Pop band Loud Oasis.

Agustin Castillo, born in San Jose, California, lived most of his life in Mexico. With a degree in Graphic Design, Agustin initiated his professional development working as freelance designer for different advertising agencies, working side by side in his art. 1997, he taught as professor of design and art in different universities and institutes in the City of Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico. 1999 Castillo began to exhibit his work in various states of Mexico and in the United States. Taking part in several experimenting art workshops in Barcelona, Spain, Agustin Castillo finds no limitations in his way of expression, exploring a mix of techniques that brings a unique visual encounter.

Always trying to develop concepts that help to canalize his emotions, ideas, and visual interpretations, Agustin Castillo creates work that is amazingly crafted using different types of materials and methods, building layer upon layer of paint and textures. He says about his work: “The concept of development is essentially based on the interrelation between color and texture inside the same space, just as the intention of suggesting that different states of mind are brought together with the spontaneity of the moment. This is how color takes on its own existence inside the different compositions creating its own interest, as the texture is based on the union of different materials creating an energy that invades the spectator.”

Elana Kundell, a California native, earned her B.A. in Art at the University of California Santa Cruz. She also studied in Italy at the Universita’ di Bologna and Accademia di Belle Arti, Bologna. Consisting of abstract atmospheres she works with color and texture to create mnemonic landscapes. This is done in part through the intuitive surfaces of the paintings as Elana Kundell uses a variety of methods (knife, cloth, brush, finger) to create the texture and flow of the works. The works almost seem to pulsate as so much energy is imbedded in the pieces through the play between color and form that the pieces seem to not only hold memories of their own but to be memories of their own — a self-perpetuating motion of emotion.
