an exhibition of short films by international artists. Selected by Red Leader Industries
Red Leader Industries presents FW:FWD, an exhibition of short films by
international artists which explores new ways that the public can access
work online. For 3 nights after dark, projected films will fill the large
windows of the Deluxe Gallery and play silently into Hoxton Square.
Simultaneously, FW:FWD online will be launched, screening the film programme
24 hours a day and offering an ongoing, rolling programme of short films
selected by Red Leader and guest curators. Viewers will be invited to join a
mailing list which delivers a free film via email per month and can then be
forwarded.
This new initiative offers an innovative and progressive way to exhibit and
distribute work and by utilising techniques previously dominated by the
viral marketeers will enable artists to reach a far wider audience and the
audience to be selective about what they watch.
The opening programme of films to be screened at the Deluxe have been chosen
for their diversity - of approach, content and technique. Yet they all share
an atmosphere of disquiet and unease.
Films selected include Depressionismus by JÖRN STAEGER, winner of Depict!
2001. Depressionismus is a 90 second urban narrative composed using split
screen montage. In Chair 4/02 JESSE BALL uses the camera as a vehicle to
colonise an abandoned municipal space. American artist BRIAN DOYLE’s
prize-winning Current creates a desolate metropolitan landscape filmed in
New York during the 2000 Yankees tickertape parade.
Retreating from the metropolis, in LIANE LANG’s time-lapse film Would for
Trees the camera becomes a fixed point in the landscape as the world moves
around it. LIANE LANG was previously featured in New Labour at the Saatchi
Gallery. In Artificial Worlds (RND#24), acclaimed music video director and
artist RICHARD FENWICK, examines technology’s permeation of nature and
culture as an idyllic landscape is repeatedly interrupted by static and
graphic interference.
Red Leader is an arts and design group who work with artists and arts
organisations with an involvement in digital technologies and are interested
in the enabling power that the Internet offers artists.
