The path of time and its connection to the earth underlies this series of paintings and drawings by Edda Renouf. Through her process of creating structural changes in the linen canvas and linen paper, Renouf makes fissures into the paper's web or the grid of the linen's weave that serve as windows onto the life of the material and the resulting geology of surface.

The path of time and its connection to the earth underlies
this series of paintings and
drawings by Edda Renouf. Through her process of creating
structural changes in the linen
canvas and linen paper, Renouf makes fissures into the
paper's web or the grid of the
linen's weave that serve as windows onto the life of the
material and the resulting geology
of surface.
The variations of pattern that Renouf exposes
reveal the inherent duality
manifested in the lines between rational and irrational,
geometric and organic present in the
works. In both the paintings and drawings the repetitive
accumulation of marks and lines is
evocative of ripples on the water's surface or of furrows
in a field or the layering of the
earth's strata, as in the twelve paneled painting: Months
- Earth Strata, 2002.
Renouf also establishes a direct connection to the passage
of time by often producing each
series of drawings and paintings within a corresponding
time period. In series of large
drawings, each one corresponds to the passing of one week,
or as with the four-panel
painting, For Air and Water, 2002, each panel to a season.
