Circulator

müllerdechiara Berlin is pleased to announce the opening of Circulator, the first solo exhibition in Berlin for canadian artist Donna Nield.

Donna Nield's work plays on the line between our constructed environment and public nature, between our increasing apathy towards the standards of composed architecture, and a questioning of the function and form of the objects that surround us daily. Through their dislocation from normal usage, context, form, and material, Circulator develops a parallel, mutant world that seems to have morphed from the very midst of Modernism and the Bauhaus, as well as their latter day legacy. In Nield's world we meet seemingly familiar sights which refuse, however, to live up to our normal expectations as either life objects or as minimalist sculpture because they approach functionality without following through completely. We find potted trees of pristine white foam, tunnels of snow that draw us in before revealing their two dimensional nature, and a staircase that provides access to nowhere: the work veers off on surprising tangents, and takes on unexpected psychological complexity. Mysteries and ambiguities replace the accepted codes that govern our orientation in public spaces.

Donna Nield lives and works in New York. Her work is currently on view in the United States as part of the exhibit Mirror Mirror at MASS MoCA, and has been previously shown at; The Sculpture Center, The Fields Sculpture Park (Art Omi), AU Base, Spencer Brownstone Gallery, DeChiara Gallery, Smack Melon Gallery, and at Momenta. She has also exhibited internationally at the Witte de With (Rotterdam), the Kunstbunker (Nuremberg), the Museum of the City of Mexico, Access Gallery (Vancouver), Or Gallery (Vancouver), TPW (Toronto), Gallery 44 (Toronto), Artcite Gallery (Windsor), Gallery Connexion (Fredericton), SAW Gallery (Ottawa), and Gallery 101 (Ottawa).

Special thanks to the Canadian Embassy in Berlin for its generous support of the leporello that has been published to accompany the exhibition.
