Art-Athina 2011

Faliro Pavilion (TaeKwonDo), Athens

The 17th edition of the International Contemporary Art Fair of Athens showcases the work of more than 350 artists represented by 58 galleries from 9 countries (Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, United Kingdom), as well as 42 institutions related to contemporary art (museums, foundations, art publishers and media). The Parallel Programme includes four different video-art screenings as well as a series of co-organised events, happenings and talks.

comunicato stampa

ART-ATHINA continues its distinctive mission of promoting art, and in particular contemporary artistic creation, making a keenly-anticipated return with its 17th edition. ART-ATHINA 2011 will take place on 12-15 May at the Faliro Pavilion (TaeKwonDo), widely regarded as the perfect venue for the event.
This year, a similar number of galleries and cultural institutions will be participating (58 and 40 respectively), offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy a panorama of contemporary Greek and international art through the work of more than 300 artists, and also through the exhibits of museums, cultural institutions and art publications. The works of art showcased at the exhibition will attract any potential buyer, since their prices will start from 300 Euros and they will even include works that could form part of museum or large private collections.
ART-ATHINA, which has become an internationally acclaimed art fair, was established in 1993 by the Hellenic Art Galleries Association with a view to showcasing selected Greek and international galleries and to organising important parallel art events. For yet another year, the Hellenic Art Galleries Association Board of Directors and the ART-ATHINA organising team are preparing Greece’s biggest annual art event. According to Alexandros J. Stanas, General Director of ART-ATHINA, “art is a lever for change and progress and it can dynamically contribute to social dialogue, as well as adding colour to everyday life.” A conviction borne out by the fact that last year’s fair attracted approximately 16,000 visitors and, contrary to the prevailing pessimistic financial climate, revitalized the country’s art scene. Moreover, according to the outcome of the first ever organised public survey in the history of ART-ATHINA, which was conducted in 2010 via questionnaires, the exhibition has been attracting rising numbers of new visitors over the past two years (an impressive increase, reaching 59.2% in 2010). The survey showed the main reasons for visiting the fair were entertainment and information about the fine arts, with 71.5% of visitors’ professions not related to the arts and the majority of visitors being in the 26-35 age range.
Among the Greek and foreign galleries, many have participated in the fair every year and others will be hosted for the first time, a fact that underlines the international profile of ART-ATHINA. The participating galleries are: 50 πλην 1 (Limassol, Cyprus), a.antonopoulou.art (Athens, Greece), About: (Athens, Greece), A.D. (Athens, Greece), Agathi-Kartalos (Athens, Greece), AMP (Athens, Greece), Apotheke (Nicosia, Cyprus), Art Zone 42 (Athens, Greece), Artis Causa (Thessaloniki, Greece), Artower Agora (Athens, Greece), Astrolavos (Athens, Greece), Basia Embiricos (Paris, France), Bernier / Eliades (Athens, Greece), Cardi Black Box (Milan, Italy), cheapart (Athens, Greece), Diatopos (Nicosia, Cyprus), Donopoulos (Thessaloniki, Greece), ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou (Athens, Greece), Eleni Koroneou (Athens, Greece), Elika (Athens, Greece), Ersi’s (Athens, Greece), Fabio Tiboni – Sponda (Bologna, Italy), Federico Bianchi (Milan, Italy), fizz (Athens, Greece), Françoise Heitsch (Munich, Germany), Gallery 7 (Athens, Greece), Gentili Apri (Berlin, Germany), Heinz-Martin Weigand (Ettlingen, Germany), Helena Papadopoulos / Nice and Fit (Athens, Greece), Ikastikos Kiklos (Athens, Greece), Ileana Tounta (Athens, Greece), Isnotgallery (Nicosia, Cyprus), John Martin (London, UΚ), Kalfayan (Athens-Thessaloniki, Greece), Kaplanon 5 (Athens, Greece), Kappatos (Athens, Greece), K-art (Athens, Greece), Lola Nikolaou (Thessaloniki, Greece), Marc de Puechredon (Basel, Switzerland), Medusa (Athens, Greece), Mihalarias Art (Athens, Greece), Mulier Mulier (Knokke-Zoute, Belgium), Nroom (Tokyo, Japan), Omikron (Nicosia, Cyprus), Peritechnon (Athens, Greece), Qbox (Athens, Greece), Rebecca Camhi (Athens, Greece), Siakos.Hanappe (Athens, Greece), Skoufa (Athens, Greece), Thanassis Frissiras (Athens, Greece), The Apartment (Athens, Greece), The Breeder (Athens, Greece), The Flat – Massimo Carasi (Milan, Italy), TinT

The cultural institutions, publications and media participating in ART-ATHINA 2011 offer an overview of the current cultural scene in Greece: artAZ, ARTeSHOP, art-idea, Athens Biennale, Athens House of Photography, Athens School of Fine Arts, Athens Voice, Athinorama, B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music, Benaki Museum, Caid Societas Scientia & Ars, Contemporary Greek Art Institute, Cube Art Editions, Cultural Organization of The Municipality of Elefsina, Diatton & Kastaniotis Publications, eλculture, Filotheamon Publications, Flash Art, Fougaro / The Artshop, Gallery Guide, General Secretariat for Youth – 15th Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, Hellenic Centre for Photography, Insider Publications, Kunsthalle Athena, LLLarts, Lo and Behold, Municipal Gallery of Athens, Municipality of Paleo Faliro, Museum of Cycladic Art, Museum of Greek Children’s Art, Museum of Photography – Thessaloniki, National Gallery, Nereus Publishers, Network of Museums and Cultural Institutions of the Athens Historical Centre, Ommu Distribution, Onassis Cultural Centre – Athens, Ozon Raw, Project Greek Island, State Museum of Contemporary Art, The Art Newspaper - Greek Edition, The Jannis and Zoe Spyropoulos Foundation, Velvet.

2. PARALLEL PROGRAMME

The Parallel Programme of ART-ATHINA 2011 is multidimensional, focusing on video-art in particular. It also includes a series of actions in progress and documentary screenings. Yianna Grammatopoulou, President of the Hellenic Art Galleries Association, notes that “a particularly interesting programme of parallel events has been planned, bringing together the creative force of our art scene and aiming at significant collaborations.”

1. Secret Journeys, from the EMST Collection
The screening programme titled “Secret Journeys” presents six videos from the National Museum of Contemporary Art collection, with themes emerging from travelling, searching and wandering in a physical or mental space. Contact with nature or another culture as well as the experience of travel itself become motives for observations and revelations.
Curated by: Stamatis Schizakis. Video art by: Vito Acconci, Sophie Calle and Gregory Shephard, Gary Hill, Martha Rosler, Shelly Silver, Bill Viola.

2. The Visual Dialogues at ART-ATHINA 2011
The Onassis Cultural Centre - Athens participates in this year’s ART-ATHINA by showcasing a selection of video-art works which were previously shown in public places around Athens during Visual Dialogues. Visual artists use contemporary media to translate into images their views on issues arising from scholarly discussions, such as history, democracy, science, ethics, quality of life etc. Curated by Marilena Karra.

3. Blitzkrieg
Blitzkrieg is considered to be a myth. It is used to describe Germany’s tactical and operational methodology during the 2nd World War. It was a coordinated military effort to create an overwhelming local superiority in combat power. The project aims to “perform” a Blitzkrieg using a selection of four of the most innovative and influential video artists from the archives of Electronic Arts Intermix: Cheryl Donegan, Andrew Lampert, Cynthia Maughan and Takeshi Murata. Curated by: QW3RTY team (Katerina Nikou, Antonia Pilarinou, Rinetta) in collaboration with Electronic Arts Intermix.

4. Activation of Peripheral Vision: Video-art from Serbia and Kosovo
Athinorama magazine, with a view to initiating a dialogue between contemporary art creation in Athens and that of two neighbouring, though not well known, art scenes, invites two cultural institutions from the Balkans to curate a video-art screening programme within the frame of ART-ATHINA 2011. Dom Omladine, a centre that promotes youth programmes in the sphere of contemporary art and culture, and Stacion – Centre for Contemporary Art, established in 2006 in Pristina by the artist Albert Heta and the architect Vala Osmani. Borrowing its title from the artwork by Darco Stojkov, “Side-Visor – Activation of Peripheral Vision” (which is included in the Dom Omladine collection), the exhibition aims to offer visitors to the fair the opportunity to view artworks from the periphery, not only in its geographical and socio-political sense, but also in the sense of art production which is not usually included in the main programme of art fairs. Most of the works on view will be by emerging artists, along with several landmark works of art by established artists. Besides, given the current socio-political situation, which remains open, concerning the recognition of the independence of Kosovo by the European Union member states, the co-existence of artworks from Serbia and Kosovo in the same exhibition makes the event even more significant. Organised by: Athinorama magazine. Curated and co-ordinated by Despoina Zefkili
5. Actions in progress IMPRIMATUR & ΒΑΝΚ_ART_NOTES
The action group In Flo, comprised of students at the Department of Visual and Applied Arts of Florina (University of Western Macedonia) and co-ordinated by three of their professors, artists Dimitra Siaterli, Theodoros Zirpiadis and Harris Kondosphyris, uses printmaking methods in order to make statements reflecting their concerns about contemporary art and the current social situation.
A: IMPRIMATUR. By rolling the floor with oversized inked printing cylinders they will print words, pictograms and symbols on paper spread throughout the corridors of the building. Visitors are invited to respond, react, undo, comment or delete the words by using big rubber stamps. By making layers of words, images, views and symbols, a visual dialogue takes place on the long path of printed paper.
B: BANK_ART_NOTES. Each student-counterfeiter creates their own banknote print and distributes their own artistic money to the public. Every day, visitors will choose the banknote they like the most and it will be printed in two small press machines. Visitors will leave the exhibition taking with them an authentic printmaking banknote.

6. Ping Pong Diplomacy
Kunsthalle Athena, apart from its exhibition stand, will also present a series of participatory games under the title “The Ping Pong Lab – Phase A: Ping Pong Diplomacy.” Ping pong is not merely conceived as a sport, but also as a vehicle of curatorial methodology which will allow a symbolic as well as a poetic mapping of an international art fair such as ART-ATHINA 2011. Through the creation of an area for mingling, each participant will have the chance to experience an alienation – albeit momentary – from their “statutory” identity, but at the same time play with this very identity. Participants of Ping Pong Diplomacy are invited to name their profession in order to play against an opponent with a different profession. This sort of categorization is most mockingly obvious at such an event: artists, gallery owners, curators, art critics/theoreticians, collectors, visitors and organising members. It is more a statement about the procedure of a game rather than the outcome.

7. Documentary Screenings
To mark three recent losses for the contemporary Greek art scene –the deaths of Vlassis Caniaris and Nikos Alexiou and the closure of the art space Zita-Mi– ART-ATHINA organises a series of documentary screenings around these important chapters in the history of our contemporary art scene. The following documentaries will be shown: “Vlassis Caniaris 1958”, from the documentary series “The Story of my Years”, produced by ERT,
“Nikos Alexiou” from the TV series “The Greeks” also produced by ERT, and the documentary “I would Like to Give you my Heart Forever Zita-Mi” by Atonis Kioukas.
Starting from his first solo exhibition at Zygos gallery in 1958, Vlassis Caniaris talks about his work of the period 1957-58 and about the impact of the exhibition in the conservative Greece of that time. This was a landmark year for the artist, who, influenced by art movements from abroad, shifted his interest to new searches and stopped using conventional media, thereby surpassing the narrow Greek boundaries of the time. The documentary spans almost the whole life of this internationally acclaimed artist, offering the audience an overview of his oeuvre.
The TV series “The Greeks” presented the life and work of significant personalities of our country. This episode of the series hosted artist Nikos Alexiou and through archive footage and a conversation with him presented his work as an artist and stage designer.
The documentary by Antonis Kioukas narrates the story of Zita-Mi, which was established in 1955 in Thessaloniki and became a symbol, a meeting point for poets and film lovers, while The Thessaloniki Film Festival, the “Techni” Macedonian Art Association and the “Democratic Defence” were all conceived on its premises. The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art was also born here.

8. Microgeographies 1
Microgeographies is a work in progress on the transformations of specific socio-geographic environments. In particular it refers to the area of Faliron bay after the massive changes that followed the Olympic Games 2004. It focuses on the action of local communities, as well as on some small-scale, minimal actions by social and artistic groups. Microgeographies are presented concurrently at Faliro Pavilion (TaeKwonDo) and at the SEANATK, whereas actions and discussions will take place during ART-ATHINA about which you can find information at: http://microgeographies.blogspot.com/
Curated by Hariklia Hari. Participants: Vicky Betsou, Michelle Brunello, Panos Charalambous, Vangelis Gokas, Francesco Jodice, Nikos Kazeros, Kifissos SOS, Lila Cambanis, Omada Filopappou, Nikos Papadopoulos, Nina Pappa, SEANATK, Nikos Tranos, Eleni Tzirtzilaki, Vasilis Vasilakakis, Zafos Xagoraris.

3. TALKS

The extensive programme of talks that will take place at ART-ATHINA 2011 from Friday 13 until Sunday 15 May includes, among others: The Art of Construction (organised by AICA Hellas), Video Art in Serbia: Past & Contemporary (organised by Athinorama magazine, with the participation of Anja Obradovic, Visual Arts Programme Manager of the Dom Οmladine cultural centre), Presentation of the Strategy Employed at the Thessaloniki Biennale by its curators, and the 3rd Athens Biennale (organised by XYZ and with the participation of Nicolas Bourriaud). The full programme will be published on the fair’s website.

4. PARTY

This year, ART-ATHINA 2011 and Bar-Guru-Bar again organise a big open party on Saturday at 9pm, on the west terrace of TaeKwonDo.

5. COLLABORATIONS – AFFILIATIONS

ART-ATHINA will be the second art fair in the world, 24 hours after Art Amsterdam, to have both a physical and an online presence. Well over 20 exhibitors will showcase the work of the artists they will be representing at ART-ATHINA through the virtual platform www.openartcollection.com, while all interested parties will be able to submit bids in order to buy works of art.

It is worth noting that, starting from this year, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism has incorporated ART-ATHINA in its ambitious communication programme entitled ATHENS EVERY WEEK and the fair will be the central event of the 1st ATHENS ART WEEK (9-15 May 2011).

The art bookstore Eleftheroudakis will also be present at ART-ATHINA 2011 with a wide selection of art books, as well as the Benaki Museum’s art shop.

Athinorama magazine invites all ART-ATHINA visitors to participate in co-designing its next cover page at the Athinorama Workshop, the specially constructed Athinorama booth in the fair. The best designs will be published at www.athinorama.gr, while the work selected by the magazine’s special committee will become the cover page of one of the upcoming printed issues.

ART-ATHINA will also be hosted at attica this year. Starting from the beginning of May, the large department store will create an exclusive window display with the theme ART-ATHINA - The International Contemporary Art Fair, bringing the fair to the centre of the city and the centre of public attention.

Quintessentially, the largest Private Members Club worldwide, is proud to announce this year’s collaboration with ART-ATHINA in hosting the Quintessentially VIP Lounge. The concept “The Quintessence of the Senses”, will be developed by the innovative architects of R.C. Tech with the use of structured ropes, lights, music, running water, touch screens and art pieces to create a Lounge area that will give guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The main sponsor, HSBC, will offer Quintessentially VIP Lounge guests the opportunity to win a piece of art every day in a prize draw. Μajor sponsor is Audi, who will be presenting one of their new models.
