comunicato stampa

Michael Benevento is pleased to present Face Forward, the first solo exhibition of Los Angeles based artist David Snyder. Face Forward will run from May 20th until June 24th, with an opening reception on May 20th from 7 to 9 PM. The exhibition address issues of materiality, façade, architecture and support in an interrelated body of four works featuring sculpture, installation and video. Face Forward will run concurrently with No Swan So Fine, a group show curated by Joanna Fiduccia at our adjunct project space located at 7556 Sunset Blvd. West Hollywood 90046.

Façades have a double life as both the most visible and least structurally significant element of a building. They are often used in media production as stand ins for “the real” because they are inexpensive, quickly produced and not subject to the same building codes as fully functioning structures. For this exhibition Snyder has installed a series of three building façades compacted to a slim dimension and scale, often flattening a broad range of architectural features into a single plane.

As guests enter the gallery they will pass through a façade mounted onto the storefront window. This initial object – what the artist refers to as a “social structure” - engages the façade as both an architectural component (this piece is the only one in the show serving as a literal façade), and as a social affectation. Installed using a wooden frame and faux stucco, this piece, complete with windows and a planter, may be read as both the front signage for the show, and as a palimpsest for a material representation of social fronts; while operating as the gallery store front the structure also resembles a face.

In the main space, additional façade structures have been hung from the ceiling and into the interior space rather than mounted on the walls. Installed in an almost maze-like configuration, guests will be able to walk through and around these structures to view their finished fronts and their purposefully unfinished backs. Snyder’s façades offer a visual access impossible in a built building, an almost exploded view where composite elements – paint, glue, caulk, nuts, bolts and framework – reveal a particular internal logic of structural composition or personality.

In the back room of the gallery Snyder’s video soliloquy further complicates the structural and social associations of façade. Here, architectural notions (solids, voids, volumes and materials), are put into conversation with signifiers of persona (content of speech, intent of voice and pattern of language).

David Snyder (b.1979) received his MFA in Sculpture from the University of California, Los Angeles (2010). He lives and works in Los Angeles
