Decalcomania

The Exchange, Penzance

An exhibition created through a process of invitation and chance, rather than a theme. The 2 curators invited 2 artists each, who then invited another 2 artists each, as an experiment in non-hierarchical curatorial practice. The 12 participating artists, brought together by what the Surrealists called 'objective chance', present film, sculpture, audio and installation.

Decalcomania is an exhibition created through a process of invitation and chance, rather than a theme. Choosing people from their professional or social circles, the two curators invited two artists each, who then invited another two artists each. A total of 12 artists, brought together by what the Surrealists called ‘objective chance’, show film, sculpture, audio and installation.

The process of invitation and collaboration is reinforced by a diverse range of public events. Throughout the exhibition’s duration Decalcomania artists will lead events that invite local artists, musicians, collectives and communities to actively participate in collaboratory workshops, talks, performances and film screenings.

Devised by Maria Christoforidou and Laura Smith as an experiment in non-hierarchical curatorial practice and collaboration, Decalcomania presents work that responds to the process of the project. It showcases the common threads that have filtered through the invited group via a lace of connections highlighting the friendships, negotiations and collective nature of exhibition making and artistic practice.

The exhibition marks a full circle. An experimental project that grew out of Cornwall expanded nationally and internationally returns to form more connections back in Cornwall.

Generously supported by Arts Council England, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Jubilee Wharf.
