Expanding our focus from Color-field to Color-function, Conner Contemporary Art presents P[OP] -an exhibition exploring visual correspondences and thematic differences between the 1960s genres of Pop and Op art.
Inspired by the optical qualities of Color-field painting and the precepts of Gestalt psychology, Op artists identified the surface properties of color- and brightness-contrast as the content of their nonrepresentational
works. Pop artists, on the other hand, embraced iconic images of popular culture, yet enlivened their recognizable forms with dynamic visual effects found in Op art. P[OP] playfully demonstrates contrasting ideas of
pictorial content expressed in these stylistic modes while simultaneously emphasizing their optical similarities.
Artists featured in P[OP] include Op imagists Josef Albers, Julian Stanczak, Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Bridget Riley, all of whom participated in the defining "Responsive Eye" organized by William Seitz at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1965. Included in that historical exhibition were "optical" works by Washington Color-field imagists Thomas Downing and Gene Davis, who are also represented in P[OP] along with Pop
artists Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol.
