Design &Foam

&Foam, Amsterdam

On Thursday 19 July 2012, &Foam will open Design &Foam, a unique combination of photography and design. For this edition &Foam is collaborating with Fabrica and Premsela. Seven unique pieces of Fabrica will be exhibited and offered for sale. Premsela will organise lectures during this period. The range of items in the &Foam shop will include a selection of (photography)books, (maga)zines, posters, t-shirts, bags and prints which reflect the design theme. In addition work of the Dutch photographers duo Scheltens & Abbenes is exhibited.

Design and Photography
The Netherlands has a reputation for design. So-called 'Dutch Design' is recognisable as minimal, experimental, innovative, unconventional and often humourous. The work of a large number of Dutch photographers is also characterised by this. An important aspect of this tradition is that instead of photos acting as a representation of reality, they are entirely staged. A famous example is the work of photographers duo, Scheltens & Abbenes, and their refined photographic still lives. Daily objects are arranged in such a way that they achieve a strong graphical and two-dimensional character.

Fabrica
Unique is the collaboration with Fabrica, the communication research center of the Benetton Group. From 19 July to 21 October 2012 the collection Still Lights by Fabrica will be exhibited in &Foam. A collection of seven pieces drawing inspiration from the fundamental principles of photography: frame, subject and light. Each project, which can be perceived as a piece of furniture, an object or an installation is composed by these three elements: a frame, a subject and a light source.

Premsela
Premsela, the Netherlands Institute for Design and Fashion, works on behalf of the growth of Dutch design. The institute organises lectures, debates and exhibitions among others. In collaboration with Premsela &Foam will create a programme about the intersection between design and photography.

Foam Editions
Foam Editions, Foam's gallery at the Vijzelstraat 78, will offer special prints within the theme design and photography, as work of Scheltens & Abbenes.

&Foam
&Foam offers a wide selection of extraordinary new and vintage photo books, limited edition prints, magazines, posters, cards and gifts. Each quarter, &Foam engages in unexpected new collaborations with unique partners working on the interface between photography and other artistic mediums: Fashion, Music, Design and Film. This year began with Fashion &Foam, followed by Music &Foam and, from 19 July this year, &Foam will open Design &Foam. In late October design will make way for the film theme.

Design &Foam will run from 19 July until 21 October 2012.
