Still Life

Brighton Media Centre Gallery, Brighton

'Photography for me has to release a kind of physical emotion placing me as close to the subject as I can, experiencing a personal challenge to represent the subject in its greatest veracity despite the intensity of the situation.' Simon Ward

comunicato stampa

by Simon Ward

Still Life is a representation of inanimate objects, which echoes the style of 18th century still life painting, exploring the use of tone and composition, and a desire to exhibit a truth about nature. Photography for me has to release a kind of physical emotion placing me as close to the subject as I can, experiencing a personal challenge to represent the subject in its greatest veracity despite the intensity of the situation. Each image is created digitally on a scanner with the real artefact. This allows me to absorb the smells and textures forming a simple but carefully composed reflection, a stillness of life, a focus to detail made by a single brushstroke of scanned light . Brighton Media Centre was established in 1992 to support the flourishing creative industries in the south east. BMC manages three sites in central Brighton offering specialist office space and business services to media and new media companies, now home to over 50 companies and organisations from film production and web publishing to event management and journalism. EK 29th April 2003 Simon Ward is the recent winner of the Dazed and Confused and Topshop Re:creation award, judged by, among others, David Bailey and Sam Taylor-Wood. His work also impressed a jury including Victoria Lukens from The Independent on Sunday and Meredith Etherington-Smith, editor of Art Review, who awarded him the top prize in the first Unscene award - dubbed as the student Turner prize. To add to these achievements Simon has also been short-listed for the International Open Image Competition. Still Life, his winning series of images, will be at Brighton Media Centre Gallery during May and June, providing an opportunity to see the work of this successful new talent in his hometown.
