comunicato stampa

Kayne Griffin Corcoran is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by Peter Wegner, focusing on new work from his highly-acclaimed series Buildings Made of Sky. Wegner will also exhibit O/N/E/T/H/I/N/G/L/E/A/D/S/T/O/A/N/O/T/H/E/R/, a sequence of 69 photographs installed in a single line encircling one room of the gallery.

Since 2004, Wegner has photographed the urban canyons of various cities. By inverting the image, the silhouette of the sky assumes the shape of the skyscrapers that frame it. Wegner recalls his moment of epiphany: "Walking down the street in New York one day, I glanced up and saw an invisible building suspended between the others. It was upside down, the color of air. A few steps later, it disappeared. Then, around the next corner, I saw another building like the first. I felt that I had stumbled upon a secret city, luminous and strange ..."

In November, Nazraeli Press will release Buildings Made of Sky, a monograph devoted to Wegner's own selection of images from this series. A feature article on Buildings Made of Sky appeared in a recent issue of L'architecture D'aujourdhui, and the series has been the subject of articles in Artforum, Art in America, Artweek, The Architect's Newspaper and Dwell.

Large grids of photographs from this series are held by The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which has exhibited the work twice in the last four years. Wegner's work can also be found in the collections of The Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and The Yale University Art Gallery. In November, The Leipzig Museum will present a survey of Wegner's painting and sculpture from the last 15 years.

Wegner discussed his work at the 2012 TEDx conference in New York and again at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, where a diptych from Buildings Made of Sky is currently on display. In 2011, Stanford University unveiled a suite of permanent installations by Wegner embedded in the architecture of their new business school campus. Large installations created by Wegner remain on permanent display at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona and the CU Art Museum in Boulder, Colorado. Wegner's work has also been the subject of solo exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, Berlin, Los Angeles and New Zealand. Wegner was born in in South Dakota and graduated from Yale University. He now lives in California.
