Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico
Architecture, Katsinam, and the Land

This exhibition, originated by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, will reveal the little-known breadth of Georgia O’Keeffe’s interest in northern New Mexico and will more particularly illuminate her keen sensitivity and deep respect for the Native American and Hispano cultures of the region. From 1931 to 1945, O'Keeffe created drawings, watercolors, and paintings of Kachina dolls (or Katsinam), carved representations of Hopi spirit beings. The exhibition will include 15 of these depictions, together with actual Kachina dolls and over 30 paintings and works on paper of New Mexico landscapes and architecture.

The exhibition is co-curated by Barbara Buhler Lynes, former curator, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and former Emily Fisher Landau Director, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center; and Carolyn Kastner, associate curator. It is organized at MAM by Gail Stavitsky, chief curator.

At the Montclair Art Museum, an intimate presentation of three works by Georgia O’Keeffe from a private collection will accompany the exhibition; it will consist of two oil paintings—Black Petunia and White Morning Glory 1 and Inside Clam Shell—and one pastel on paper, Pink Camellia.

Georgia O’Keeffe in New Mexico: Architecture, Katsinam, and the Land was organized by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and was made possible in part by The Burnett Foundation and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum National Council.

This exhibition is presented at the Montclair Art Museum with major support from The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.

Additional generous Exhibition Angel support provided by the Vance Wall Foundation.

All Museum programs are made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Vance Wall Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and Museum Members.

Saya Woolfalk
The Empathics
September 28, 2012 - January 6, 2013

Saya Woolfalk: The Empathics is the first solo museum exhibition by the acclaimed multimedia artist and the second in MAM’s New Directions series of contemporary art exhibitions. Blending fantasy, humor, and play, Woolfalk’s art draws on anthropology, mythology, and fashion to present a fantastical world that encourages us to consider our most pressing societal issues, particularly concerning cultural difference, in a new light. The titular Empathics are a fictional group of women who, the artist imagines, blend racial and ethnic identities as they metamorphose, taking on characteristics of both humans and plants. In the exhibition, the Empathics’ story unfolds in the form of a fictitious ethnographic display—yet with kaleidoscopic colors, patterns, and textures unique to Woolfalk’s extraordinary vision. Woolfalk’s colorful installation includes human-scale, fabric-based sculptures, some of which double as costumes in her innovative performances; intricate paintings; thought-provoking videos; and interactive web technologies.

The exhibition is organized by Alexandra Schwartz, MAM’s curator of contemporary art and founder of the New Directions series, with Kimberly Fisher, curatorial assistant.

NEW DIRECTIONS is an annual contemporary art exhibition series, launched in 2011 to inaugurate MAM’s new contemporary art program. It spotlights emerging to mid-career artists working in all media.
