Marie A Roberts, banner painter for Coney Island USA's Sideshows by the seashore will present an exhibition of her recent work.

Marie A Roberts, banner painter for Coney Island USA's
SIDESHOWS BY THE SEASHORE will present an exhibition of her recent work at
Bowery Gallery, 530 West 25 Street from September 30 to October 25. Among
the painted personalities on view in banner paintings will be the Amazing
Blazing Tyler Fyre and the Permanently Unelected Mayor of Coney Island, as
well as an assortment of sword swallowers, human blockheads, impalement
artists,
snake charmers, and human pincushions.
The Amazing, Blazing TYLER FYRE will make a special live appearance and
perform in front of his painted backdrop at 7:30 pm on October 2nd.
Roberts, an Artist in Residence at Coney Island USA, the non profit producer
of Sideshows by the Seashore and the Mermaid Parade, has been painting
banners seen down there since 1997. For this Bowery show, she will also
exhibit for the first time painted pottery picturing the 2003 MERMAID PARADE
and the Polar Bear Club's Annual New Year Day Ocean Swim.
Professor Marie Roberts teaches banner painting at Coney Island USA's
Sideshow School as well as at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Metropolitan
Campus in Teaneck, NJ where she is a Professor of Painting and Drawing.
Her work has been exhibited widely; she painted both backdrops for annual
the Siren Music Festival and The New York Burlesque Festival. Last
February, she was profiled on CUNY TV's Study with the Best, her work is
reproduced and her place in sideshow is discussed in the 2003 NY Society
Library Book of the Year,
