comunicato stampa

The Museo Nacional de Escultura (Sculpture National Museum) of Valliadolid present the exhibition Instante blanco of the Spanish artist Bernardí Roig.

The exhibition will present ten white sculptures, three of them are new works done specifically for this show.
Instante blanco is site specific exhibition. Bernardí Roig intention is to establish a dialogue with the Museum's collection and space, to create a new atmosphere and give to the place a new look. His intervention has to be intended like an action that refutes the concept ofthe museum as a mere store of objects located and collected chronologically.

The contrast between Bernardi Roig sculptures and the Museum Collection generates a series of alterations in the historical memory represented by the permanent exhibition and proposes a new itinerary and interpretation of the collection. These ten white sculptures break the sacred silence of the place to propose a new route through the collection of polychrome sculptures.

The title of the exhibition refers to the famous phrase of Goethe's Faust: " Stop, instant: you are so beautiful". The sculpture represent that moment which is captured in the stillness of the form. Bernardi Roig explaines: "that moment is white, because the light once trapped coagulates. It’s in that moment, when we can say that the eye has been submerged in a glass of milk. A huge glass of milk in which the meanings have not yet coupled."

Bernardi Roig's work has always been linked to the poetics of space and has established a tense dialogue with the memory of the images. The light acts as a metaphor for that memory. It's a light that doesn't illuminate, but that dazzles and stuns, that blinds us, like memory. Roig's solitary white sculptures - taken from real people's calque - represent a reflection on the human figure as last and lonely presence. The set of his latest work reflects the vanity of language that continues it’s floating into the ashes of the image.
