Sunlight

Elizabeth Price’s first solo exhibition in a public gallery since winning the Turner Prize in 2012.

A two-screen video work, SUNLIGHT (2013) occupies the main gallery space and forms the first part of a trilogy of new video works by the artist. The film has been constructed using thousands of glass-plate slides of the Sun, created between 1875 and 1945, which Price discovered during her on-going residency at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

This will be Focal Point Gallery’s inaugural project in its new building and Price’s first solo exhibition in a public gallery since winning the Turner Prize in 2012.

Big Screen Commission:
Renee Vaughan Sutherland

This is the first of a new quarterly artist's commission for Focal Point Gallery. It will be screened daily for three months on the large public screen in Elmer Square, Southend-on-Sea.

For this commission, artist Renee Vaughan Sutherland has collaborated with the Southend based film archive The White Bus. Working closely with the archive, Vaughan Sutherland has digitised and re-edited a selection of film material which spans thirty years, and includes themes from photography and lightning, to poetry and bikers.

Born in Australia, Vaughan Sutherland now lives and works in London.

This commission will be screened daily, in a random sequence between 8am – 10am, 12pm – 2pm and 4pm – 6pm.

Focal Point Gallery is committed to commissioning temporary interventions, exhibitions and installations by contemporary artists with a variety of partners to provide an exciting programme of events linked to educational opportunities for the local community.

Focal Point Gallery will open a new gallery space on Monday 30 September, located in The Forum, which is a hundred yards from Southend Central Station. (Trains every fifteen minutes from London Fenchurch Street. Journey time fifty-five minutes.)
