comunicato stampa

MOTINTERNATIONAL London are delighted to present a solo exhibition of new work by Clunie Reid, In Pursuit of the Liquid.

Reid places destructive and conceivably violent depictions of female sexuality at the forefront of her works, subverting and contaminating otherwise misogynistic representations. The artist appropriates her imagery from internet pop-up ads and chatroom avatars, bringing animated porn-stars in proximity to IBM's 'A Boy With His Atom'.

For In Pursuit of the Liquid, Reid has transposed her formerly drawn and collaged works into a four screen installation, ripped and repro images becoming flashing layers of manipulated digital material.

The figures that judder in and out of the work’s frames are both hyper-sexual and infantile. Computerized women thrust their bodies into ever more unlikely, baroque exaggerations; their faces register plastic astonishment at their loss of control. Pneumatic forms are frenetically intercut with girlishly winking cartoons walking pixellated poodles, and smiley-faced .gifs flash vacantly across the screen.

Reid's strobing, spasming images insist with frenzied urgency on their presence before dropping out of sight. Both symptomatic and explorative of how images are consumed and then discarded, the works suggest a state of play which prioritizes immediate delivery, while rushing towards exhaustion.

Clunie Reid (b.1971) lives and works in London. She has exhibited internationally, presenting work at the Photographer's Gallery, London (2013); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013); ‘Art Now’ at Tate Britain, London (2010); The New Museum, New York (2010); Bielefelder Kunstverein, Germany (2010); Contact Photography Festival, Toronto (2010); Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea (2009); Fotomuseum Winterthur, Zurich (2009); and Institute for Contemporary Arts, London (2008). In 2007 she was selected for the prestigious East International, selected by Matthew Higgs & Marc Camille Chaimowicz, and received the John Jones Art on Paper Award in 2009.
