Dreamgirl

November 21 through January 10, 2004

Marvelli Gallery is pleased to present Dreamgirl, the first solo exhibition at the gallery of German artist Stefanie Schneider. On view will be a series of color photographs that orient us through loosely woven storylines. The works constitute suites, repetitions, sequences, wherein the juxtaposition of scenes conceived by Schneider create tensions amongst the characters inhabiting them and portray expansions of time.

Schneider’s scintillating situations are open-ended narratives that radiate an unsettling feeling. The images are ambiguous and their content open to individual interpretation, thereby inviting the viewer to bring his/her life experiences to bear on them. Schneider’s photographs are reminiscent of flickering scenes from old road movies. They suggest allusive narratives taking place in the American West, which are inherently fictional but also tangentially autobiographical, for she performs the role in some of the portraits.

Schneider works with the uncontrollable chemical mutations of expired Polaroid film stock. Contrary to the usual association that Polaroids carry the energy of instant, raw, documentary footage, Schneider’s images depict mis-en-scenes which are altered in the photographic process. Spots, streaks and chemical explosions of acidic color fuse to form dense corporeal masses that spread across the surface and undermine the medium’s commitment to reality. The painterly quality acquired in the process is an additional element that contributes to the complexity of the narratives and envelops her characters in trance-like dreamscapes.

Stefanie Schneider is a graduate of the Folkwange Schule Essen, Germany. Her work has been exhibited widely in Germany at the Städtische Ausstellungshalle am Hawerkamp in Münster, the Kunstallianz in Berlin, the Institut fuer Neue Medien in Frankfurt and the Nassauischer Kunstverein in Wiesbaden.
