PICA showcases work of young muralists

An exhibition about to open at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art is the culmination of a unique art project that provided five local young emerging muralists with an opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of all facets of working as professional artists.

The artists, Pippa McManus, Leo Thomson, David Scott, Tull Ashard and Siobhan Briggs, in conjunction with mentor artist Stormie Mills, were involved in the Town of Vincent's Smith's Lake Mural Art project which resulted in the mural now covering a 60-metre long by 4-metre high wall adjacent to Smiths Lake in Bourke Street, North Perth.

The business component of the project gave the young artists an opportunity to develop skills relevant to working in the industry and an insight into the procedures of local government., while the artistic component included the research of mural designs to ensure they were relevant to Smiths Lake, community consultation, design workshops and implementation of the final design.

Vincent Mayor Nick Catania said the wall, remuraled with images relevant to Smith's Lake, had become a focal point for people of all ages to view the history and stories of the area.

"And now the PICA exhibition is not just providing creative space for the young artists to display their work, which is really important for any young emerging artists, but also giving them yet another opportunity to develop their skills and understanding of the art industry."

The Town of Vincent has invited the Town of Kwinana, who are also very supportive of young artists, to share space at the exhibition, which runs from Wednesday 27 November to Sunday 14 December and is being managed by the Vincent art project mentor, Stormie Mills. A free public opening will be held at on Wednesday November 26 at 6pm. A free public opening will be held at on Wednesday November 26 at 6pm. The Smiths Lake Mural Art Project has received financial support from Arts WA, CANWA and the Town of Vincent.
