Esther Schipper is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Angela Bulloch in the gallery.

Bulloch’s work investigates various systems and patterns using light, sound, video and sculpture. The artist is perhaps best known for her pixel boxes, where the abstract notion of a pixel –the smallest modular element of a picture– is turned into a separate light-emitting sculpture that displays sequences of colour. Since 1990, she has also made a series of automated drawing machines, which use a complex series of algorithms stemming from pieces of music to arrive at large abstract wall drawings.

At Esther Schipper, Bulloch presents a completely new body of work contextualized by new editions to existing series; such as her Pixel Boxes, Drawing Machines or the recently re-released 1994-series of Happy Sacks –a bean bag that the artist refers to as 'social sculpture', which provides visitors with a possible viewing platform for the exhibition .

Her new work has its starting point in a controlled virtual world, where the artist creates renderings of geometric patterns, shapes and sculptures, which are then transformed into three-dimensional objects. The underlying structure of the works on view at the gallery is the rhombus, a four-sided polygon. It provides the modular basis for various types of wall-hangings and free-standing totem-like sculptures, which are composed of repeated modules of rhomboid shapes. In addition, visitors will be able to interact with a virtual exhibition guide via an avatar on a handheld tablet based on an assistant at the gallery. Via a handheld tablet, visitors will be able to interact with a virtual avatar, who will function as an exhibition guide and is based on an assistant at the gallery.

Angela Bulloch (*1966, Canada) is an artist currently based in Berlin making sculpture, installations and music. She is known as one of the Young British Artists, studied at Goldsmiths in London and first exhibited her work in the 1988 Freeze exhibition. Recent solo exhibitions include: The Wired Salutation (performance with David Grubbs), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2013); Short Big Drama, Witte de With, Rotterdam (2012); Time & Line, Kunstpreis der Stadt Wolfsburg, Städtische Galerie, Wolfsburg and Information, Manifesto, Rules and other Leaks..., Vattenfall Contemporary, Berlin (all 2011). She has been commissioned to complete works for FRAC Nord – Pas de Calais / AP2 (2012), Ruhr Licht Biennale, St Reinoldi, Dortmund and Art Pacours, Art Basel, Basel Cathedral, Basel (both 2010). In 2012, Bulloch founded the independent record label ABCDLP, which she established with the specific purpose of making the music relating to her work accessible to a larger audience.

In Virtual Vitro is Angela Bulloch’s 11th solo exhibition at Esther Schipper with whom she has been exhibiting since 1989.
