Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Walter Anderson's birth, the Brooks is mounting an exhibit of the artist's works from the Museum's permanent collection. Anderson spent much of his life exploring the natural wonders of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and capturing his experiences in visual forms. His "oneness with nature" and expressions of this harmonious communion resulted in artworks that appeal to all of the senses. Through his use of line, color, and form he encapsulates the rhythms, movements, sights, and sounds of the flora and fauna of his coastal landscapes. The exhibition is curated by Assistant Curator of Education Karleen Gardner.

From teapots to toys, posters to blueprints, garbage cans to Web sites, the exhibition US DESIGN, 1975-2000 celebrates some of the most exciting work produced by American-based designers during the last quarter of the 20th century. This exhibition marks the first attempt to offer a critical and comprehensive analysis of contemporary American design. It explores many of the major theoretical and cultural issues that have shaped the design arts during this period and examines the design arts—architecture, industrial design, graphics, and decorative design—as a totality. US DESIGN, 1975-2000 will document the accomplishments of three generations of American designers: internationally recognized figures such as Robert Venturi, Frank Gehry, and Deborah Sussman; a middle generation including Thom Mayne, Steven Holl and Katherine McCoy, as well as exceptional younger designers such as Maya Lin and Ross Menuez.

Success by Design: Memphis Arts Bridge
December 7, 2003 - January 5, 2004

Funding for this collaboration is generously provided by and The Jeniam Foundation.
The Education Department is excited to announce a new partnership with Bridges, a non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst for empowering youth and adults to reach their potential through education, leadership, diversity, and workforce development. Teens from Arts Bridge, a Bridges program, will be introduced to career possibilities through this project, which is organized in conjunction with US DESIGN, 1975-2000. The participants will tour several Museum exhibitions, including A Chair Is?, discuss design with Professor David McCarthy from Rhodes College, and take trips to Target to look at the work of designer Michael Graves. Under the guidance of Jim Buchman, Director of Arts Bridge, they will then design their own tables and chairs for the exhibition Success by Design: Memphis Arts Bridge.

In a new partnership with Bridges, teens learn how to design their own tables and chairs.
