Peter Rollny

Greusslich Contemporary, Berlin

...through which the world flows...The exhibition features a selection of his new works on paper.

comunicato stampa

In his third solo-exhibition with Greusslich Contemporary, Peter Rollny presents a selection of his new works on paper. In these small format works, even more concentrated and atmospherically dense than his canvas images, unfolds a surprising interplay between two apparently disparate elements: gestural, informal paint marks on the one hand, and on the other, figurative, photographic collage elements alienated through computer manipulation.

Although Rollny consistently applies the same strongly typified figures from a limited pool of workforce - sitting or standing older men in casual or street attire as well as young, barely clothed women with a distinctive pageboy haircut and shadowed eyes- each image yields new constellations, each with its own relational scenic tensions. Always kept in black and white, and at times inverted in negative, the figures function in their meager spaces like the unsettling remains of dream or memory; passive, lifeless and umbral - and even more haunting if one has observed that they have been assembled from disparate body parts.

The surrounding space operates against this with its nervous, dynamic, often strongly colored webs of line, clots of color and drips of enamel, energetically applied and pulsed through with a vitality missing from the depicted image workforce. In the end are yielded pictures the potential narratives of which appear to rise out of deepest layers of the mind; revenants from the psychic outer fringes of forgetting and suppression. Accordingly, they intensely impact a viewer’s activities of memory and association.

Two diverse types of image are presented in the exhibition. While Rollny's two-part works feature a rhythmic sequencing of the image field, with the elongated horizontal format likewise lending its own filmic quality, the newest works exhibit the distinction that the artist has, as a final step, worked over the surfaces with yet another layer of oil paint. Through this painterly finish the psycho-energetic and saturated color space becomes even denser and more pressurized. The cool color temperatures, based mostly on green, white and black, and the brownish corona organically accumulated around the color marks through the absorption of the oil into the paper, altogether create a highly ambivalent and emotionally agitated atmosphere.

Peter Rollny (*1967) studied at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe and has worked in Berlin since 2000.
