Marcelino Goncalves

cherrydelosreyes, Los Angeles

For his second solo exhibition at cherrydelosreyes, Marcelino Gonçalves has created exquisitely subtle paintings of poignant moments and places seen through the lens of solitary male figures. By focusing on discrete observations, Gonçalves' imagery situates his open narratives onto tightly framed views that resonate with memory, day-dreaming and private nostalgia.

comunicato stampa

cherrydelosreyes presents a solo exhibition by Marcelino Gonçalves of figurative oil paintings on panel that resonate with location, solitude and imminence.

Each image exudes drama by placing the viewer in the context of an invisible protagonist. We don't know why Gonçalves' still-lives, interiors or landscapes bear such reverie, but they do. Whether they are as simple as a stairwell lit warmly by fluorescent light or as potent as a small black spider trapped under a glass, each painting demands attention and reflection. What is certain is that these images have control over the viewer as portents of some discreet and powerful memory.

Continuing the artist's theme of reflection, other paintings turn the viewer into a "voyeur" who sees the ones responsible for such visions. In these paintings, we see men lost in their own interiors as they walk in the rain or lay nude on a patterned sofa, quietly thinking. Through the push and pull of moment, memory and character, Gonçalves delivers the empathy inherent in the best storytelling. Taken as a whole, what makes the artist's work so remarkable is his lack of pretense while still securing the gravitas of classic romanticism.

Marcelino Gonçalves' first exhibition with cherrydelosreyes received a Best of 2002 mention and a review in the December 2002 Artforum. Gonçalves received his MFA from UCLA.

An opening reception will be Saturday, March 6, 2004 7-9pm.
