Rafael Lozano Hemmer
A Draft of Shadows

Artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer works with robot-controlled light and sound, radio waves, motion sensors, film projections, animations in real time and location-specific sounds and voices. In his large-scale installations the virtual meets the real.

As a visitor, you are invited to be a co-creator. With the help of your movements and heartbeats, the work takes on its own life outside of the artist's control. In Pulse Room, a sea of light bulbs blinks in concert with visitors' pulses. Frequency and Volume is a playful sound installation that visitors influence with their own shadows.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (b. 1967, Mexico City) resides in Montreal, Canada. His installations have been shown in several of the world's leading art institutions and biennials. A Draft of Shadows at Bildmuseet is his first solo exhibition in Scandinavia. During the same period he is also participating in Digital Revolution, a group exhibition produced by Barbican Centre, London, now exhibited at Tekniska museet in Stockholm.

Thanks to the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation and the Spanish Embassy in Stockholm.

Campanas
Woods
November 2, 2014–February 8, 2015

(2014-10-16] The Brazilian design duo Fernando and Humberto Campana is world famous for their colorful, individual and experimental furniture influenced by traditional crafts. Taking inspiration from nature, they created a site-specific installation exclusively for Bildmuseet.
The exhibition opens on Sunday, November 2 at 14:00. Welcome to the press preview at Bildmuseet on Thursday, October 30 at 10:00. Humberto Campana will be present and provide an introduction to the exhibition which is Campanas’ first in Sweden.

For Bildmuseet, Campanas create a site-specific room installation titled Woods, inspired by nature and composed of flax and wood.
– We found the inspiration in nature explains Humberto Campana. The message we wanted to generate was bringing nature indoors. The forest taking its place back and turning tables he says.

In their furniture making Campanas uses everyday materials such as rope, cardboard, stuffed toy animals, blankets, bamboo and plastic tubes. Even in the creation process for the installation at Bildmuseet they approached different materials with the goal of utilizing them differently; this time sourcing material from the Swedish countryside. Their way of working is characterized by a free mindset, unconditional and without predetermined parameters. The results are proofs of this organic process.

Fernando Campana (1961) and Humberto Campana (1953) live and work in São Paulo, Brazil. Among previous venues, their work has been shown at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Milan Furniture Fair and during Beijing Design Week. Their furniture can be found in collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among others. They also created the costumes for the National Ballet of Marseille and stage design at the Guggenheim in New York.

The press event will also introduce the exhibitions Anders Sunna / Area Infected and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer / A Draft of Shadows. The artists will both be present.

Campanas / Woods is produced by Bildmuseet and will be exhibited from 2 November 2014 until 8 February 2015. For access to press images, scheduling of interviews, etc., please contact the press coordinator Helena Vejbrink.

Anders Sunna
Area Infected
November 2, 2014–February 8, 2015

For his painting, Anders Sunna gathers subject matter from history and his personal experience. Frequently, the subject is a lengthy conflict played out between the family, the Sami village and the county administration.

At Bildmuseet, he presents a new painting that depicts a series of events arising from this long-running conflict. Among other things, its subject is the forcible removal of their family and the reindeer and the practice of guerrilla reindeer herding as a survival strategy. Anders Sunna combines different materials and techniques; he places great emphasis on making the surface of the painting an expressive dimension.

Anders Sunna underlines the power of the image. He believes that the image affects the spectator more directly than a text which, when all is said and done, you must choose to read and make an effort to understand. He also describes how his feelings of frustration and injustice demand an outlet and how he has found a way of channelling his anger through the visual arts. Through his paintings, he claims visual scope to be able to recount his family's story.

Anders Sunna (born 1985) comes from Kieksiäisvaara, in the far north of Sweden, and is active in Jokkmokk. He studied at Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm). Some of his most recent exhibitions have taken place at the Swedish Institute in Paris, France (2014); Korundi, Rovaniemi, Finland (2014); Gällivare museum (2014) and The Sami Artist Centre SDG, Karasjok, Norway (2013).

This exhibition is produced by Bildmuseet, with support from Umeå2014 and Kulturkontakt Nord (Nordic Culture Point).
