Zoro Feigl: Hula & Hoop

Zoro Feigl refers to his work as animals that he wants to domesticate, yet tries to keep their untamed spirit. To create juxtaposition between the monotonous and the unpredictable, he creates a careful balance between taking control and letting go. Often the creations are crude in appearance, and yet have certain elegance in motion. Above all the spectator is prone to experience the excitement of the mechanical. The sheer joy of the act of creation shines through and is infectious; being in the same space as these ferocious machines makes one want to start building, moving, and creating. It can’t be helped; one easily becomes hypnotized by the electric boogie of his machines. Feigl makes the inanimate dance, shimmy, and shake.

The work comes into existence through play. The studio a playground, filled to the brim with all kinds of materials, it is not hard to imagine great things happen here. Feigl is constantly trying to find boundaries by pushing the limits of both material and machine. Testing out the physical properties of the material itself he discovers new ways of use, and not necessarily the way they were intended to be used. Then, of course, there is always the possibility of decay and failure. The resulting works are an investigation in movement over time. By finding the spectacle in the mundane, Feigl creates simple, yet spectacular installations that leave a craving for more.

Once the work is finished and installed in an exhibition space it takes on a life of its own. Out of control of the artist, the pieces wear and tear, make an imprint on the space, and always leave some kind of residue. The work is a precarious balance of being in and out of control. This unstable equilibrium can be terrifying at times; will the piece tear itself and its surroundings apart or will it continue to amaze and astound, float and skip, bounce and hop? The installations invite you to come and find out, but be careful, they can be fierce.

Hula & Hoop are two new works that Zoro Feigl has made for the two spaces of the gallery. Black hoops are running back and forth through the space, like some sort of children’s game. Sometimes they violently bounce off each other and sometimes they gracefully dance in perfect harmony. The smaller hoops effortlessly slide through the larger ones, while they constantly interfere with and accentuate each other’s movement in a rhythmic choreography.

In the second space a thin strip of fabric elegantly dances through the air. Its simple movements make a graphic, continuous motion within the room. Reminiscent of a rhythmic gymnast it also brings to mind a merciless wrangler whipping his lasso. Juxtaposing the violent motion of the machine against the subtle, elegant motion of the ribbon, the work creates temporary continuously dissipating drawings, always changing and hypnotic.

Zoro Feigl (1983) lives and works in Amsterdam. He graduated from the Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam and the Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunst, Gent. His work has been shown internationally at various exhibitions including the New Media Triennale Beijing, FILE 2015 Sao Paulo, Dutch Protest Museum Moscow, A+B Contemporary Italy, 0gms Sofia, Verbeke Foundation Belgium, Black Door Istanbul and several institutes in the Netherlands such as Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, MU, DordtYart, Het Nieuwe Instituut, W139, Arti et Amicitiae, Fons Welters and De Service Garage. He has received a number of prices, among them, Beste Buren Public Award at Art Rotterdam 2015, Volkskrant Art Prize Public Award 2013. He has curated several exhibitions and is organizer of Kafana, an artist run initiative.

Luuk Smits: Video Collection

Luuk Smits makes use of his camera in order to record the casual and unnoticed situations that take place during daily life; these in-perceptible stories behind the objects have the power to fascinate him, and have became the main subject of his artwork. Through his work he achieves to make fun of the boring; for instance, his project ‘Doing hotel Dishes’ comes from the tedious working environment of a hotel dishwasher, which he transformed, into an artwork. After discontinuing his job at the hotel he started the dishwashing service ‘Doing your Dishes’. Smits is invited as a guest for dinner, and after that he washes the dishes, then the host can receive a photo with a dish-composition as a document of the action.

In the project room Luuk Smits shows a serie of videos that derive from different projects since 2013 until the present, and where he expreses through his recordings the beauty of randomness and the poetic on the unseen occurrences. With his camera he captures objects in movement, to which he sometimes applies a small movement in order to produce a dance on them, and other times he records the essence of the objects’ own dialog with the environment.

Luuk Smits works and lives in Rotterdam. He graduated from Koninklijke Academy voor Beeldende Kusten, Den Haag and Fotonica, Ede. His work has been shown in various exhibitions including, FOAM, Amsterdam, UNSEEN bookmarket, Amsterdam, or KABK, Den Haag. He has been part of ‘Conceptual Documentary’ exchange program by the University of Newport, UK.
