Kyoichi Tsuzuki

Musee d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean - Mudam, Luxembourg

Happy Victims – you are what you buy. Since 2001, Tsuzuki has been shooting the Happy Victims photo series. He takes an unbiased look at Tokyo ‘fashion victims’ who spend most of their income on clothes and accessories made by their fetish label. The result is unsettling: the photos of these cramped apartments overflowing with relics are a far cry from the minimalist image we often have of Japanese culture.

Happy Victims – you are what you buy

"I see myself as a mediator who exposes the power of creation of unknown artists: people on the streets, in the countryside, from all over the world." Kyoichi Tsuzuki

Born in Tokyo in 1956, Kyoichi Tsuzuki worked for 20 years as an editor and journalist for Japanese magazines on contemporary art, architecture, design and urban culture. Now a freelance editor, he has travelled across Japan, Europe and is currently in the United States to photograph unusual sites and the peculiar aspects of daily life that reflect his curiosity about cultural specificity.

Exhibition co-produced by Mudam and the Festival International des Arts de la Mode d’Hyères, France, Villa Noailles (FIAHM). Curators: Michel Mallard, Clément Minighetti.

Publications

During the Happy Victims exhibition, Mudam presents Kyoichi Tsuzuki’s major publications, including: Tokyo Style (1993), an ambitious photo-documentary project on life in Tokyo; Roadside Japan and Roadside Europe, compilations of astonishing images from his travels; Universe for Rent, a veritable catalogue of housing modes in Japan that records domestic and urban environments; Satellite of Love, an inventory of intimate and erotic spaces which evokes human relationships but in a climate devoid of life.

On the occasion of the exhibition Happy Victims – you are what you buy, Mudam has produced a free publication, designed by Michel Mallard.

Mudam Nomade
